I know we all love music, but who's your favorite visual
artist? and by visual artist, i mean painter, sculptor,
photographer, director, etc.

Warhol, Oldenburg, Rauschenberg, Liechtenstein, deKonig,
Chuck Close, Picasso (of course), Braques

Rauschenberg's great isn't he?, he reminds me of Radiohead's
Ok Computer artwork, he definetly inpired Donwood anyway.

Im into the obvious ones too, but i like Lucian Freud's art,
its fucking brutal, he paints flesh the way Cronenberg
Directs flesh - its a slab of meat.

I think Pollack would have been great had he done one
splatter painting and then moved on. It was innovative and
a stroke of genius, but not after he made a career out of
it... just imo

I like David Hockney alot.. he's probably my favorite
artist. I also like those German Expressionists like
Schieler and Ernst.

Isn't that kind of like Autechre should have done one track
of abstract electronica and moved on?

I've actually done some Pollack style artwork. pollack might
have moved on, you never know. but a fatal car crash
prevents us from ever knowing. regardless i dig him, but i
can see why some people don't enjoy his work.

i did a watercolor pollack on a piece of ceiling tile, and a
spraypaint pollack on a piece of plywood.

as for rauschenburg, he IS amazing. not to mention
underrated.

Warhol basically only had one idea, that he just capatised
on, you think he should of just packed up and left?..thats
complete rubbish

I guess this is more opinion. I contradict myself all the
time.. however, with the examples of Autechre and Warhol
respectively, I feel that they had more in their single
idea(s) to justify keeping and exploring the idea. Warhol
was concerned with mass production and the gradual rise to a
machine-like state of being, hence the repetition worked
within his own ideology so it seems. Autechre is exploring
a style that has a similar sound but is hardly a rehashing
of a concept. They have thousands of unique ideas within
each piece.

I suppose this latter argument could be made in defense of
Pollock, but to me it seems like this was not so much an
intentional exploration of the style he'd created but a
gimmick he latched onto. I think he *was* being self
expressive, I just think it was overdone. Maybe he should
have showed a little self-restraint and done a series of
three or four of them even, and then stopped after exploring
several variations. I just think he went overboard.

I how could he be truly self-expressive if he imposed
self-restraint on his work?

To me, Pollock was creating art in it's purest form by
removing as much intellect from the process as possible. I
don't know how you can move on from that. In fact, I think
that had he done anything else it would have been a step
backward.

I give Pollock kudos for being self-expressive and making
almost completely pure expressive works.. however I find
that too much is wrapped up in the process of its creation
and not the art itself. If one is analyzing it from simply
a self-expressive point of view, it would've been more
suited to a documented performance art more like Joseph
Beuys.
Aside from art vs. process.. I think that the works would
have been more effective if he had showed some
self-restraint. Maybe this would've hindered his
expression, maybe not. I think that refinement can kill
ideas. However, a lack of refinement can also be very
sophomoric, not to mention can alienate viewers and
exasperate even patient audiences. I like what he was
trying to do, I guess it's just not my cup of tea. Like I
said I prefer German expressionism and later some
minimalism, pop art, etc.

as far as pop art goes... i really enjoy stuff by Brute, the
dude who does all the KMFDM cover art... his website has a
lot of cool stuff too... on the abstract end of things...
there's this dude called Frank Jenkins who's pretty cool...
kind og Pollackesque... with textures coming right off the
canvas... my Grandfather has this huge picture by him on his
wall at his apartment (he's an arts dealer)... it's cool how
different this picture looks from every angle... my sister
says it looks like a pickle in a tuxedo...
