AIKIDO

Personally I think Aikido is the highest level of martial
arts.

Here's a VERY nice link with clips of the founder of
Aikido:
http://www.geocities.com/yovrosental/oshiba.html

Some years ago I wanted to practise AIKIDO, I like concepts
of this martial arts, technic and meditation.

btw: Steven Seagal is an AIKIDO's expert, isn't it?

I heard he's meant to be one of the top in the world of
whatever style it is he does.

I went to one class once and never returned. I'm not
supple/fit enough. I always liked the idea of martial arts
but never had the motivation/commitment and patience to
devote the time it takes to get good.

In Aikido you use the attackers force no? Clever.

I've not done anything but Lau Gar. I've never been to a
Japanese martial arts club before. Aikido is very
respectable.

Whats with all the pictures of people drinking pop from fast
food places?

Pop is nice. Anyway, only old grannies call it pop.

(Let's not go down this route though - it'd be off topic!!)

Drunken Mastah, I know that's probably a joke, but I really
wouldn't recommend making accusations like that. He might
hunt you down and kill you (if Kung-fu films are to be
believed) for dishonouring his family style :)
Esp. as it's the old China vs. Japan rift :)

I remeber getting into a fight (not "proper", but not just
playful either) as a result of someone claiming Tae Kwon Do
was a better fighting technique than Judo :)

He landed a pretty good side kick on me before I managed to
get him in a hold against a wall.

Fuck him! Kung-Fu man is like water, Aikido man is like
wind. If you fill the wind with water, the wind disperses
into water. Wind cannot be filled with something without
becoming it. For a human to become anything but human is
impossible, so if you try to fill a Aikido-wind-human with a
Kung-Fu-Water-human, the Aikido will perish.

Yeah, I tend to agree, it's just that I wouldn't like to say
that too a good akido or juijitsu player... :)

If you were really out to hurt people, Kung-Fu or Karate is
the way to go. Stuff like Akido, juijitsu, judo, etc. are
better for self defence.

Are you thinking of Wushu? The precursor to Kung-Fu. That
literally was a "martial art" an art of war.

nah.. not WuShu.. i know about that.. Fu-Manchu. I'm pretty
sure.. It was a close combat-thingie for soldiers. Before
the time when the emperor invited the Shaolin monks to come
and teach his troops..

In the newspaper today it said that Steven Seagal has
decided not to do any violent films any more because his
Buddhist guru has told him not to do so. He also told him
not to associate with his children from previous marriages.
Apparently his business partner now wants to sue him for
£50m.

Aikido is in my opinion, the only "true" japanese style.
Praticaly all martial artists know that the other japanese
style arts are re-rendered korean arts they stole/outlawed
in an old nationalistic takeover of the korean dynasties.
Simple examples=
Karate-Tawkwondo-So Bak ki, Hwa rang do
Judo/Ju Jitsu-Hapkido-So Bak Ki

Practially all of the arts were first devised from "Buddhi
Darma," (many other names ie. Dal Ma) to help the shaolin to
condition their bodies. The stories were that the shaolin
only prayed, and their physical bodies were deteriorating.
But "O-Sinsay" (the founder of aikido) has developed an
outstanding art based on the theroies and principal of
neutralization. There are Chinese soft styles, but they
don't focus on neutralization of enegery, mostly
redirection/punishment, and self-improvemnet. I could go on,
and on....

I heard Karate was based on Tiger style kung-fu...

I agree about the origins of it. It was meant to be the
monks let their bodies deteriorate and couldn't handle the
long periods of fasting as a result, so they learnt wushu
(soft forms first) to enable them to be a ble to cope with
the fasting and pilgrimages. Sorry if you replied already,
but what style(s) do you do Nanotech?

oh and about the tiget style kung fu...i don't know where
you heard that, and if your instructor told you that i'm
pretty sure that he/she had his reasons...so i need to reply
with out offending...but on a non-biased point of view...if
you look at the stances/hand techniques/foot
techniques/forms/wepons/sef-defence techniques, they are
practially the same.

My martial art has a major philosophy that all martial arts
(just like much of everything else) is like a tree...they
have the same roots...same trunk...but it's not until you
get to the branches/leaves that you encounter the diffrent
styles.

There is even a saying in aikido (i thought this is
apropraite for this thread) "What can be used fro one...will
be used for many"

Many reasons people do martial arts
-sport, competitiveness
-physical fitness
-self defence
-'its cool'

Me? cos i love dancing & moving my body
and the school i'm in is 2000 years old with a lifetime of
learning about it, yourself and other people
[Togakure Ryo Ninpo Taijutsu]
It is to martial arts what braindance is to
sound

Anyone see Photeks - "ni ten ichi ryu" video of the samurai
vs. 'ninja' ?....AMAZING..its sound choregraphed to a sword
stroke or body movement

Aikido for me is waaaay to arty and not martial enough. Its
taken one concept - going-with-the-flow/redirecting force to
the limit while ignoring other things like use of weapons.

Brazillian ju jutsu is the dogs bollox for gorund fighting
and competiton but is doesn't address weapons and multiple
attackers so it falls down for me as a complete martial
art.

The Bujinkan has everything - every weapon, every strategy
every possible attack because its "priciples" based and
beyond style/rules.
