i don't think there are huge differences, i wouldn't want
one that had a big effect on what it was playing anyway. i
recommend foobar, for god's sake get rid of
realplayer

a media player shouldn't affect the sound at all, unless you
use plugins and EQ settings etc.

the only thing that would inherently change the sound of
something so that it would differ from the original intended
sound would be the soundcard (and even then, that can be a
debatable issue)

no debate. Soundcards DO affect the sound. They utilise
different digital to analogue converters, some of which are
more linear than others as well as different anti-alias
filters, etc. Not to mention small pertubations in clock
frequencies, and stuff like that!
It all makes a difference! Even if you can't hear it,
someone somewhere will (or claim to at least!)

I thought RealPlayer was generally considered Malware and
something that, once you found out about its insidious
presence, had it surgically scraped off of your computer?

exactly my point

claim to hear

anyways, my main point was in saying that media players as a
general rule of thumb shouldn't do anything to the sound
unless you tell it to (for example applying application
based compression or EQ)

if they do colour the sound in anyway other than instructed,
then that's very bad

i heard that in recent years RealPlayer has stopped with
it's maliciousness, but that doesn't make me wanna install
it.

the last time i had realplayer on any system of mine was
1998. and it was probably the cause of the numerous problems
i had on my PentiumMMX 166MHz system (which i overclocked to
200MHz all by myself woo)
