A couple of friends of mine went to school for music, one's
now working with Paul Haslinger (he scored some shitty
movies like Vacancy, Underworld, Crank), and another is
mastering music for rappers like E-40 for a pretty big
studio. So I guess it can help.

I guess it depends on whether you want to release music for
yourself creatively, or if you want to work in the music
industry at some level.

It's my understanding that Aphex and Autechre had no formal
musical training whatsoever, if that counts for anything.

just want to do it for myself - but everything sounds bad
you know? i need to learn how to do mastering and using
compressors correctly and etc. all my stuff just sounds so
bad

did you listen to that madlib album i posted here in that
other thread? its like amazing to me how that album sounds

Well I like your stuff. Some of it might sound umastered but
that's not a bad thing, it just needs a little post-work.
Lots of people send their mastering off to third parties
anyway.

My local community college also offers classes on mixing and
mastering, you should look and see if you have anything like
that in your area.

Haven't gotten to the madlib thing (not sure if I've even
seen the thread) but I'll track it down later tonight when
I'm on a better connection for downloading.

wasnt madlibs dad a jazz musician? i dont know for sure but
my guess is that madlib has probably been around people
doing music pretty much his whole life, listening to it,
watching people making it and recrding it, so i wouldnt be
so hard on yrself, if youre teaching yourself you cant
expect 2 learn everything there is to learn just at the
click of yr fingers, that's yr lifes work right there man!
these things take time. try enjoying it and time and a bit
of reading and just simple doing what you love doing will
pay off in the end. if you dont like the tracks your makin
at the minute just make some more and inbetween makin tracks
just read up on as much stuff as you can and remeber theres
no right or wrong way of doing stuff, what some guy who
records rock bands says about compression isnt always gonna
apply to what ur trying to do....

I magine like the film School of Rock but without Jack Black
and instead RDJ, hey School of Rick, and he'd be all
introverted and stuff and the pupils would all be autistic
and they'd work together to get this show on for the local
Laptop Deathmatch and Global Goon would be the fussy
headmistress and they might win, they might not, it all
sounds the same (Soundtrack by Team Dyobber) and then
there's the bad guys who are these German bedroom types that
just rip off Basic Channel for the next twenty years and
then, at the end Kraftwerk blow up, or blow off, depends
what rating we're going for.
