the u.s. has been a "success" for a fraction of a second in the grand scheme of things. look how long china and india were hegemons--the u.s. has been pretty much done for for years and it's really on the way out

Good post, but that still strictly your opinion of what political success is. And while I fundementally agree with your point, I don't think that power is always a negative thing. I think power can by a byproduct of a happy, productive society, and I think power can be used to a means of well being.

..and your opinion is not just your opinion?
The only power that comes into play in a proper political system is the power granted to its politicians by its subjects. This power was even present in the rules of kings and still so in the rules of dictators: If a king or dictator can't hold sufficient (sufficient isn't necessarily quantifiable, like, he has to have 50% or more, and can even be a lot less, if one were to count it in any way) power (when power is still understood as granted by the subjects), he is usually quickly overthrown. In that sense, even the hardest dictatorships are, in a sense, democratic, if stretched far enough.
Political power is also not the sort of war-like or "infectious" power to spread beyond itself, but rather the power to distribute goods to its subjects, from whom it gains its power (authority).
In today's society, the power of political entities, like states, usually spreads far beyond what one would traditionally consider its borders, and this is largely due to trade and globalisation, or, rather, the entire global political system. Thus, to count only those living within the traditional borders of the entity as its subjects would be just plain wrong, and thus the responsibility from the powers granted to it, extends far beyond these traditional borders, and to all subjects affected in any way by its activities.
A good night to you all.

I stated my opinion was subjective, not quanitifiable like measuring success agaisnt power. I do agree with most of what you are saying.

i would say any system (like the mind) contains good and bad
it does however seem to be the best system for facilitating evolution. disaster capitalism, like the workings of the mind, evolves more substantially with complex dilemma
