The famous electrical recording engineer Steve Albini says of IDM "As the idiom developed, the music became more and more about the novelty of certain sounds and treatments, ridiculously trivial aspects like tempo and choice of samples, and the public personae of the makers. It became a race to novelty. I find that kind of evolution beneath triviality. It is a decorative, not substantive, evolution." Steve Albini is often known to record music without using excessive production techniques such as overdubbing.

I agree. Most "developments" in IDM have been nicked from other genres like drum n bass, ambient, modern classical...
etc

I love Steve Albini and, of course, he's absolutely correct in this instance. "Deocrative" is exactly the word, exactly. It's background musak for IDM musicians making their own background IDM muzak.

i don't think that's accurate. you might say that idm was more driven by the evolution of the tools, digital processing etc. and you couldn't have drum'n'bass without breaks, or dub. all the genres you mention are frequently characterized by appropriations from other genres.
i think albini's characterization is what you'd expect from someone who doesn't like the "decoration." if you like it, it's originality, if you don't, it's "novelty."
tolstoyed is right to point out that albini's production modus operandi is to avoid "substantive evolution."

also, idm is frequently characterized by artists who completely lack a public persona. people criticized idm for being faceless and impersonal. not surprisingly, it was media sources who latched onto cards like rdj. albini apparently learned most of what he knows about idm from some bullshit magazine.
there's plenty of boring, sterile, derivative idm. just like rock music, hip hop etc etc etc.
funny, no one ever criticizes zydeco for being derivative and predictable.

FACT: Steve Ablini produced Slint's two albums, The Jesus Lizard, Pixies, Breeders, Nirvana, The Stooges and a whole lot of others, as well as his own bands Big Black, Rapeman and Shellac.
FACT: IDM as a genre produced a series a sonic farts.

fact, what you like or don't like doesn't mean shit to me.
fact, steve albini RECORDED those records, he didn't compose or perform them.
fact, steve albini is as much known for his status as loudmouth blowhard as he is for his engineering.

FACT: I was talking with someone a couple of weeks back who "made out" with Albini once, some years ago, and I nearly went to meet her (not because of the Albini incident). But then I went mad(der) and didn't, which I regret deeply now. Maybe another time.

um, yeah we know he made his own band's records....
fact: i used to live in chicago and i saw steve albini shriek like a little girl when he saw a mouse run across the floor.
fact: steve albini has never eaten a sno-cone.
fact: a good 40% of steve albini's productions were actually accomplished by a life size cardboard cut-out of steve albini. while 20% of those bands were aware of the substitution, none of them chose to speak up.
fact: next fact is pending while the wikipedia page is updated. stay tuned...

come on now, you're just being difficult...
but as you wish...
as we all know, albini and his cohorts did indeed compose and perform the material of those three bands, barring roland, who was programmed according to the whims of a ouija board stolen from a local elementary school.
of course, i'd be remiss if i didn't point out that albini has publicly declared the pixies and numerous other bands he recorded to be total shit.

easy there jeeves, i'm just havin' some fun. in all fairness, steve albini ate a sno-cone once but it froze his face and he demanded (and received) a refund.
fun fact: i missed big black's last performance in champaign illinois because i had an ironic headache. but they lit firecrackers on stage 15 minutes in so the show was stopped. but not before an acquaintance got a hole punched in his skull by the incisors of some madly moshing douchebag.
and yes, that douchebag was none other than slipdrinkmats.
that is mostly true.

Music that relies heavily on the novelty of the sounds does stand the chance of sounding dating very quickly. Didn't Milton Babbitt say the same?

But, many of aphex's songs I don't think will suffer from this. Mainly cause he doesn't rely too much on novel sounds but on composition.
