In 1992, Warp Records released Artificial Intelligence, the first album in the Artificial Intelligence series. The record was a collection of tracks from artists such as Autechre, B12, The Black Dog, Aphex Twin, and The Orb, under various aliases. These artists, among others, would eventually become the main topics of conversation in the IDM List, an electronic mailing list founded in August 1993.

The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine was released 6 months before AI1
Conclusion:
Warp did not invent IDM

i think it grew out of the "Intelligent Drum and Bass" term i remember hearing that around the time jungle started devolving into d'n'b
it was a terrible term then and even worse now doesn't take much intelligence to crush bits

you're right it was philosophy of sound and machine era but the wanker that invented the name was i-D magazine. they had a big feature on a.r.t. b12 black dog rephlex etc and as usual threw away all the interesting facts and just filled the article with hot guff and nonsense, inclusing "intelligent" dance music which unfortunately coincided woth LTJBukem coining intelligent drum & bass so the shit stuck. as a result the scene was effected and didn'y fulfil it's potential in some areas and over fulfilled in others. another sign of the world going to pot because the people in charge have no expertise. magazines suck arse, people only buy them for emergency toilet paper (ouch)

Well, you are probably right and so is probably diamondtron, but I only just learned about the pre AI1 releasedate of PoSaM and was so thrilled that I probably overdid it...
And I think PoSaM is so much better than AI1 as well....
Back in '92 I remember we used to call it Electronic Listening Music before we even heard the term IDM. But ELM is as bad as IDM.
Nowadays I just say Electronica...
