just finished installing (linux) ubuntu haha weird its free
, im legal and i feel allot safer from nasty hacker beasts.

ive a dual boot with xp so i can test stuff out before it
goes on my main machines.

but a what a headache.. you have to teach the freaking
thing what you want.. like 'read write NTFS drives' then
figure out how to tell linux you are the owner of the
machine before you can edit the OS ..not easy to become the
root so you can program the bitch..its all so
errggg..without the forums on the net NOoooo way could i
have done it.

i had to edit the screen settings via a note pad to get a
screen res higher than 800x600.. because i couldnt get a
driver for my card/monitor

but now its sweet and im enjoying my new clean internet
browsing OS.

freQz x

telling it you are the owner is such a brilliant feature.
I always used to do the su command to switch to root and
then tinker around, but after using ubuntu, I deciced I
liked the sudo method instead.
It's really good. Trust me.

I lied in the other topic, new ubuntu comes out on 18th of
this month. Your setup should auto install updates. By the
way, the apt-get method used to manage packages in ubuntu
(inherited) from debian is really good.

I hope you like using it. I would love to type more, but am
far too tired/drunk.

sounds like the install is coming on leaps and bounds. I had
to hand craft the xorg.conf excessivly at first! good luck.

ubuntu on the 18th? just a little easier i hope for
everyone , because i want it to take over the world.

this OS has very low latency too. lower than any other if i
remember reading?

..i wonder if steinberg will every make a cubase/nuendo
release? maybe they have already? must do a search.

ok right do NOT do sudo -s ever!
That command will give you super user control for every
command you do! One mistake and boom!

You should be using it just as say:
sudo command

this way you can do all the normal stuff as yourself and
then just do the critical bits as root. I would suggest you
do stuff as yourself and only sudo things when it says "only
root can do that" or something similar.

Whoever told you to do sudo -s is clearly an idiot. You
should NEVER use that command unless you know the risks and
have backups. Seriously, if you are using are running in a
sudo -s shell, if you type rm -rf / it will quite
happily delete EVERYTHING on your computer. It assumes what
you type is correct and does it. If you make a mistake,
tough...

On a lighter note, new ubuntu comes with compiz fusion as
standard to do all wizzy graphics, melting windows, boucy
menus and all that other waste of CPU eye candy stuff as
well a load of other stuff. It's all on the ubuntu site.
