haha, yeah, I still find it a bit silly the way the numbered the episodes... I think EP1 should have been called Episode 2, and EP2 should therefore be EP3, since HL2 itself was episode one...

first time i played hl1 i didint even finish it because the xen level.
but oh it was such a great game, were you surprised when you found out the military was out to get you? i was. or how about those spray painted messages they left for you. the flow of it is great. the tentacle boss with the rocket! good times.. good times...
and i agree about in hl2 you are just running from "someone" and going "somewhere" but you never know why. but i don't care, because the flow is great too, and there's always something happening. also it fits the story, you're placed there by the g-man no explanation, no nothing. so freeman is actually in the same position as the player. it is consistent.

The bridge on the coast, you have to cross underneath it on the girders. My ass almost comes out of... my ass when I'm that high up in games.
OK- consistently inconsistent, yeah. The feeling of ''being funneled'' towards goals, and level design overstuffed with the most divine and unlikely architectural and situational coincidences is pretty much outweighed by how FUCKing awesome the game is. But I need to complain about something.
I skipped to Ep 2 and it's soooooo much better than Ep 1 was. Great environments. The vehicular part (quit during it) feels good because of it. It's like the Buggy trip through a prettier route.
You know what I like most about HL2, is how every dilapidated building and tunnel and complex looks like something right out of an urban exploration gallery... the peeling paint and everyday items left behind... everything looks lived-in, and formerly functional. I can't really explain what is it about the architecture, textures and lighting that makes it look so much more believable than so many other ''ruined civilization'' videogame environments, but the art direction is perfect.
Even the Vortigaunt in Ep2 mentioned this, how seeing these places that used to sustain life makes him sad. And that comment made me sad. Then I shot a zombie in the face with a shotgun.

heheh shotgunning things is so cool. i just had another hl1 memory, those special op forces, the black ninja type soldiers, first time i played the game I thought they were so tough! what a headache! but the second time around they were like the most easy thing to kill. you just waited in a corner, then the ninja would show up right in front on you.
I meant consistent with the "storyline" whatever that is. freeman is just placed there by the g-man to set a chain of events in motion, freeman isn't given a mission.
