I just want to be able to buy a CD, I don't want vinyl.
Downloading is free anyhow.

I have never paid for a download, I am not planning to, I
buy loads of CDs. If I can buy it on CD I will. If I can't
it is free!

I think Radiohead are wondering if I am the norm in this
respect. From what I have read in this thread I think it is.

Holy shit! Most of these songs have been played live and
they're very good I must say. INTERESTED!

A lot of bands have been doing the LISTEN TO MY RECORD
ONLINE BEFORE IT'S RELEASED 2.0 stuff ... not just shitting
on Radiohead a lot are doing it, and it's not because they
are being nice (though they really make it seem like it is)
it's because they realize they make more money live, and
since the internet mp3 ipod shit lot's of bands have been
getting way more new fans, because of the open peer to peer
market.

You imagine if soulseek didn't exist for us? I'd know of
like ... Aphextwin and thats it. Not all (cause there are
some really hardcore music fans here) but most find out
about new bands via mp3.

50cent released his album for free before it was released on
CD ...

I would have a lot more respect for them if they did this
several years ago, or at least admitted to what they are
doing. I guess I might be getting a little jealous that the
million dollar band is going to be playing the INDEPENDENT
artist role in all the music magazines for the next year,
when really the real guys are people like us who have day
jobs and try to release our music on line.

But whatever thats not the thread, excited to hear this hope
it's good !

just order it again..?

—

i don't know whether to download it or not — i'd like to
give it a listen before deciding between the discbox (if i
love it) or the normal cd (if i just like it), yet i'd feel
kinda guilty to say i want the mp3s for free. which is
silly, i know, but... i wonder whether they'd regret their
decision to distribute the album this way if everyone
downloads it for 0.00.

I bet they couldn't care less if you entered 0.00, really -
they are so wealthy now, I reckon they're doing this as a
kind of gift to the fans, in a way. They know they'll get
shitloads from the hardcore fanbase who will all buy the
boxset anyway. And seeing as I've spent probably 150+ quid
on their past cds and concerts, I don't have a problem
getting this one for free, and have ordered it...

Having said that I will probably go halves on the box with
my brother.

people hate them but who cares, i love em and im psyched to
see them make a major move on their own..kudos to them, i
will be buying the box as i usually love all the artwork
they release with their records and this one should be in a
nice sized format if it comes with vinyl...

i lost interest in radiohead after 'ok computer' but i
really like this idea of letting people decide how much they

the Jammie Thomas episode the industry deserves a HUGE kick

The radiohead release is just one big PR stunt IMO. By doing
like this they made sure they were on headline news all over
the world, for free. If an unknow act did the same thing do
you think anyone would care? Being an unknown band on the
internet is about as exciting as being in the phone book,
hey we are relasing our album on the net, ok ,gee wiz!

Radiohead would not have been where they are today without
the backup of a record company early on in their career.

The trick here is free press. We're talking about it on this
site, other people are talking on others. It's in magazines
and on the cable news shows. Mustering an ad campaign like
this would cost a fortune and it is. They are under-selling
or giving away their music at the expense of making
headlines. They're betting on the backside and will probably
win. Good on them! The next band/artist to offer the same
deal wont be doing it with as much press or any that doesn't
reference the pioneers.

Radiohead dont need the money, the press, or a promo stunt
or the press coverage, Im pretty sure just about everyone on
the planet has heard of Radiohead before.

I see, so rich people don't care about money. That explains
why we live in a utopia.

I think radiohead counts on making as much money from this
album as they have from previous albums. One way or another.

i don't think you get the point. this is not as much about
making money as it is about making a statement: artists
should not be as dependent on the industry as the industry
would like. you do have a point however in the sense that
they're biting the hand that fed them (the 'industry'). it's
a bit hypocritical, but the statement is a good one and
hopefully it'll change the game somewhat. i mean, what if
every major artist will release their own stuff on the
internet. there wouldn't be much of an industry now, would
there? and in that sense radiohead's statement is first and
foremost a statement in the direction of the industry.
hopefully they'll wake-up.

They're not giving away the album either IMO, they're giving
away an EP. The discbox has a double album in it (which I
might be purchasing soon), the download does not.

The download is for the people who want to listen to their
album. It's been almost four years since they released Hail
To The Thief, it's going to be interesting to hear how their
sound has changed. "Lots of piano" is what I hear.
Radiohead had three guitarists at one point; I'm not sure if
they still do. I'm going to listen to this if I get an
email on Wednesday. My confirmation email didn't say
anything, just had a few lines like this:
