Jackie Chan kicks.. but BRUCE LEE is THE MAN! No-one can
take out Bruce!

(Chrouching tiger, hidden dragon KIIIIIIIIIIICKs! But it got
good criticism and lots of Oscars based on the wrong
things.. if it hadn't been for the fact that Ang Lee made
it, it would never have even gotten out of China.)

Oh, I wouldn't mind giving drunken Kung-fu a try as I'm
quite flexible, reasonable at moves and conditioning, but
crap at learning forms.

I've had to give up Dragon Style Kung-Fu due to my stupid
university timetable where I miss *both* training sessions
as I have lectures till 8pm (20.00 hours). Still, I'm going
to take up chinese boxing in Bristol.

interested in martial arts,

try bruce lee's masterpiece,
jeet kun do (i think that's how its spelled)

you don't block, you intercept(punch the guy in eyes or
face)
you knock a guy out in one punch,
and you can hit a guy five times before he can even throw
one punch.

i love martial arts.

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2002-03-21 22:48 [#00135114]

Jeet-kune do. I know! Bruce lee could have taken on the U.S
army all by himself! That man was a prodigy!

I'm just REALLY happy, 'cause all his films have been
digitally remastered for DVD, and all the scenes that were
cut out before(almost all the good stuff) are back in!!!
WOHOOOOO!

Jeet kun do is actually not thought of *that* highly among
those who practive the ancient martial arts...

The intercepting fist that JKD is famous for that you
described has (like most of the style) been knicked from
other styles! A similar move is found in Dragon style
Kung-Fu (Made Hundreds of years before JKD).

Another Criticism is that JKD whilst being very effective
among masters due to its unpredictability (like drunken
kung-fu) thanks to the huge variety of moves, take a long
time to get good at. Put a person who has done a years Wing
Chun or Dragon against a JKD beginner and see the
difference. The reason for this is the large number of JKD
moves that
a beginner has to choose from in any situation often
overwhelms them and they hesitate. Whereas a Dragon Style
student would only have 2/3 move that would be appropriate
and would strike first.

Another criticism is that not enough appropriate
conditioning is done in JKD as it takes moves from many
styles without all the relevant conditioning required to
a) Do the move to the full effectiveness
b) Avoid injury
c) Prevent ageing

Not dissing you or your opinion, but just out of interest do
you do any martial arts ZombieKev?

Bruce Lee was great and his style is certainly very good for
him, but I'm unconvinced in it's effectiveness as a style
for your average Joe.

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2002-03-21 22:59 [#00135147]
Points: 35867 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

Bruce stole it all from Kung-Fu, he just removed the styles.
He thought that if you could become more like water(not
having to change into one style before performing the move,
and then to another to perform another move, but to do them
all in one style)

Secondly: Bruce AIMED at injuring people.. he got kinda
pissed at the other martial arts -people for not wanting to
teach other people than asians Kung-Fu(YOU couldn't be
practicing Kung-Fu right now if it hadn't been for Bruce).
They set up a fight, which bruce won. As he was leaving, the
other guy got up and broke his back. Bruce got the "Won't be
able to walk again" -prediction from the doctors, but
trained his muscles back up to FULL capacity, and developed
Jeet-Kune do.

I agree with the changing between styles mid fight to be a
waste of time (bad example I know but see Lei in Tekken 3)

I learnt a bit of Snake, Tiger and Wing-Chun and quite often
we would use movements from one in another form without
changing stance.

I agree about lots of people using it as a tool to hurt
people, my style is what is use by the majority of Hong Kong
Triads.
It is certainly effect, I've caused internal bleeding to
someone (by accident) when using it.
As to Bruce getting Kung-fu taught to westerners, he
certainly sped it up, but I believe it would have happened
anyway. If you recall, Kung-fu initally was never taught
outside the temples and it was one monk (I forget his name)
that changed this by teaching a tailor and his son. My
Master a caucasian male went to China in his 20's (before
Bruce Lee was famous) and trained as a herbalist and then in
Dragon Kung-Fu. He then returned along with our Sifu who set
up the first club in Wales. I've had the honour of being
trained once by Sifu (a Chinese Man) and he was one of the
first people to take Kung-Fu out of China to Britain. I
think he would have done it even if Bruce hadn't made the
first move.

What Bruce Lee did was popularise it with a western
audience.

Why did the asians break his back then, eh? They didn't want
it taugt to outsiders. He taught it to anyone.

BTW.. the coolest aspect of Kung-Fu(methinks), is PRESSURE
POINTS!!

Do you study? If so what style?
Do you do soft work as well as hard and do you do any Chi
healing?

Pressure points are cool, but my master (who works as
chinese herbalist/physician) reckons *some* of the pressure
points are crap. The stomach ones located on the traps (dips
in front of shoulders) are cool as you can make it look as
though you're just holding someone at arms length then they
fold up. Pressure points are good if you get attacked as
bystanders will not say you "hit" the attacker meaning
you're less likely to go to court.

Have you ever used a kubotan (not sure of the spelling)?
Very good pressure point based weapon and discrete enough to
be carried on a keyring.

It's no to the Kubotan, at least.

eh.. about the pressures that are crap.. probably the ones
connected to "vibrating palm" (a triad deat-touch(or so it
is rumored)(some people think Bruce got killed by one of
these, 'cause the triads were pissed at him(he kicked some
of them sometime)))

Nah, Chris just knows I've been playing SFEX2 tonight :)

There's lots of misinformation about death moves,
intentioanlly to protect each styles secrets. The black
forms tend not to be taught to novices and are quite hard to
perform (so I'm told).

Fun Kung fu fact: There's a bloke who does Mantis style
Kung-fu in one of the London fish markets who can punch
through wooden pallletes with 2 fingers!

disgracing his monastery.. we need more honour in this
world.

i take martial arts, and am at the level where reading this
is kinda funny. I'm not puting anyone down, I'm just saying
that I used to have these same curiosities/ambitions.
Nowadays, whenever i watch a kung-fu flick...I'm so critical
on the techniques/stances/etc. that i lose some of
enjoyment, it's like i'm judging demos. Kiss of the dragon
is a good example...those taekwondo germans....and that
little "i'm going to power up before i do my jump 540 hook"
arm raise/tense fist thing was WAY to chessy.

if your curious as to the martial art, it's being
restructured and renamed, it used to mean complete warrior
arts (jungaye Moosul), but now since we're adding more
soft-style techniques (mostly from yang-style tai chi chuan,
bakwa, and xingyi) the name is going to mean something like
xhing moo do (scholarly arts)...
