One of my brothers mates I met once was good at Lau Gar, he taught it in Cardiff. We were discussing the various pros and cons of our styles. He'd done a bit of Wing Chun (more than me) and criticised it for always attacking from above making it a bit predictible.
We do a bit of dodging etc but the most common defensive moves are to avoid the full brunt of the force and push sidewards into them at 45 degrees.

Yeah Akidos japanese, quite similar to Judo. It centres around using your opponents force against them. I knew a couple of people who did it and my girlfriend is currently looking for a good Akido dojo.
I used to do judo which was good fun.

Yeah we hardly ever sparred. I read a theory before (that my Master agrees with) that if you Spar you undo the "damage inflicting" muscle memory. In a real fight you may not respond with full force because of this.
Our Master said he didn't have much faith in Sparring, he said he used to do it a lot when he was younger, but had a bad experience on the street from concentrating on sparring compared to "proper" fighting. I think he got beaten up in China when he was younger, but he doesn't talk about it much...

In my (admittedley limited) experience of the different styles of Kung-fu and talking to people who do different styles, they seem as different from each other as say, Karate and Tae Kwon Do. The different styles of kung-fu just seem more keen to borrow bits from other kung-fu styles rather than "outside" martial arts. Originally they were very different -each temple had a different style and they used to fight against each other in annual tournaments where the best representative of each would compete in a (often to the death) fight.
Mad stuff indeed.
Have you ever noticed how most people are very defensive of criticism of their style, even more so than themselves or their country? I think it's because they get annoyed at the suggestion that something they've spent years learning is nearly worthless.
Way to get in fight = Slag off the martial art of someone who does a different one to you :)

Just saw the photos and captions. My style only implemented gradings about a year and a half ago to come under Uk Kung-Fu regulations, we have a mutual respect as your club described. Frequently when demonstrating locks & holds, members senior to me would bow in recognition of my knowledge due to the fact I had done Judo and a lot of the locks crossed over.

Def! If you slag off a martial art people get really upset! You're also right about all the different Kung Fu arts being very similar. I just like to learn about my body and knowing exactly where it is all the time. Become so much more aware of stuff.
Yea, there's lots of respect in the class between every member but We're not very strict when we're learning. We have fun! The disipline is from within. You cant learn if you dont disipline yourself in the class.
I love Kung fu. You dont know you get really good at it until you notice it in others around you. It's very gradual. Get black belt in Tai Kwon Do in bout 4 years yea? You have to wait at least 5 years after brown sash before you can think of going for you black! Alot of study and practise. But you know that Ceri.

If you want to do that learn 'bout your body, go try T'ai Chi. That is a healing kung-fu style. It teaches you how to stand and stuff. You learn to keep your body in perfect harmony all the time. Another good option, is Bruce's Jeet kune-do.. it says something like "every available second of the day should be spent working out. If you drive to work, park your car a few blocks away and walk the rest".

Cool advice but I'd rather stick to Lau Gar. Jeet Kune Do is too vague and Tai Chi Chuan and Lau Gar are very similar. Cheers tho.
