for the last week i haven't been able to stop thinking
about death. how i'm going to die eventually and that'll be
that. i'll cease to exist. it's not only eating me alive but
eating me out. i haven't been able to behave normally
because of it. i'm not feeling depressed, just frightened
and frustrated and helpless.

how do you guys cope with thoughts of the inevitable?

sincerely,
optimus prime

Hi, I've been giving that subject an unhealthy amount of
thought lately, as well. Basically I'm terrified by the
thought of dying, and as I believe that there is no
afterlife, I had better damn well make the best of this one,
which I haven't. I usually just think about it until I
manage stop thinking about it. That's unfortunately my only
strategy: just hope that someone or something changes the
subject before I go totally mental.

Stay on the Internet, especially on a board where no one
particularly cares for you, you're bound to perk up. By no
means go and speak to anyone or ask for a hug.

Start by going outside with a bottle of water, take a walk
to get some fresh air. Drink the water. You could die at any
moment, any one of us can. You probably won't die for quite
a long time, though. I walked around for a month thinking I
was going to die every day from some random occurance, like
I would slip in the shower and break my neck or a plane
would crash into my house. At the end of that month, I
realized how ridiculous it is to worry about the whole mess.
Whatever will be, will be. You can't change your mortality,
nor can you create an afterlife if there isn't already one.
We all just have to go through the motions, and do the best
we can with what we have, until eventually one day we don't
wake up. It's that simple.

if it's advice you're after, then how's about you root out
your local drug dealer, buy as much acid as possible, and
take it all at once. you should be right as rain by the

You'll never ever accept the idea of death. All you can do
is build an elaborate lie or forget about it. It's a paradox
of reason and it's stupid and horrible.

Deal with it even though you can't deal with it.

offline SValx from United Kingdom on 2007-08-24 06:54 [#02113810]

Why are you worried so much about it? It is fairly likely
that when you die you'll be old and most of your friends and
the vast majority of your family will already be dead. That
will change your outlook on things quite a lot, I imagine
and then you might not be as scared of dying as you are now.
You might even look forward to it.

No, it will only make things worse because you won't be able
to tell yourself that you're still young and death is a long
time away :)

yes but you would probably have far less to live for. Less
friends, less family, less mobility, less hobbies, no job,
less appetite, more pain, more bitterness

That would be part of the elaborate lie I mentioned earlier.
Pain and loneliness are nothing in the face of death. You'll
never accept death, I mean it. Acceptance is denial.

way to cope.

Nah it's alright I feel good. I find it more funny than
anything at the moment, because it's so tragically
unresolvable.

That's because I'm in denial of course.

What makes you think that one philosophy, your philosophy,
fits all? There are many people who are completely at peace
with the idea of death; Buddhists for example. How can you
say that the only possible way of them managing to reach
this state is by way of an elaborate lie or forgetting about
it? They certainly haven't forgotten about it. Quite the
opposite in fact, they meditate about it and think about it
thoroughly.
I am also not particularly scared or worried about death.
I've not forgotten about it, as I've had to deal with quite
a few friends/members of my family dying recently, and so it
is quite constantly on my mind. There is no elaborate lie
that I have weaved for myself, no denial. I'm fully aware
that I might die in a painful way, and that it might be the
end of everything. I'm also aware that it might not hurt and
it might be very sudden, but know that there's no point
spending my entire life worrying about my death instead of
my life. Where's the lying or denial there?
You seem to be trying to make certain, philosophical and
profound statements, but are failing to back them up with
any kind of logic or reasoning.

Okay I'll put it differently. You might accept the idea that
you'll have to die someday. You can't accept or understand
the idea of yourself dying.

I'm trying to find some backing up but I'm lazy and all the
Internet is giving me is those stupid five stages of grief.

Well I can only say that we at material things.. that said
we also exist on energy. Now imagine yourself as an energy
being. So what I am trying to say is from what we came is
where we go.. Now with energy we can still exist on material
things like computers, music stuff and the people that draw
your energy for there deeds.

i'm not sure why, but when i was an atheist (and later,
agnostic) the idea that my existence would end absolutely
with the death of my body didn't bother me at all. it does
sound pretty terrible.

i recommend learning to meditate (to initiate the discipline
of taking responsibility for your thoughts and to direct
them to your satisfaction). you need to learn to let go of
persistent thoughts that you're obsessing over. you might
view your persistent thoughts as an annoying habit, and one
that you want to lose. you're the only one who is directing
your thoughts, and you are the one who is choosing to dwell
on this discomfort.

also, choose to focus on the simple pleasures of life. it
may sound silly at first, but try setting aside just a few
minutes a day to explore in detail the texture of various
objects. pick an object with an interesting texture,
examine it closely, and feel it with your hands and
fingertips. feel your hands. try to think only about the
details of this experience while you're doing it. do it for
only five minutes or so, at the most. whatever it is, make
sure it is different from what you ordinarily do. don't
decide to sit down and focus on xlt.

lastly, i'd like to add that you should not worry, optimus
prime; you're going to be ok.

Well you can't just make statements and provide no arguments
to back your theory up! Otherwise it's like saying, for
example, "God exists and if you don't believe it, you're
either lying or in denial! Because I said so!" :D
You can't expect to persuade others to come round to your
way of thinking without giving good reasons why you think it
to be the case. As your argument stands without anything to
back it up, I could just ask, "why can't you understand the
idea of yourself dying?" Surely it's just like any other
complex idea. You haven't died before, yourself. But you
have spoken to or read literature by people who are dying
and have been told how it feels to them. You cannot know
what it actually feels LIKE to die, but that doesn't mean
you are lying or in denial about the idea of it happening.
