DM totally unrelated, I want to know what you think of one
of the most problematic MGS story elements for me... MGS3's
handling of the Cobra Unit, specifically The Pain, The Fear,
The End and The Fury. Something about it... really...
bothers... me. What did u think of these villains and their
relevance to the story? DId u liek or not liek

to me they were like g.i. joe action figure villains. absurd
obstacles and nothing more. or, to put it another way,
bosses for the sake of bosses.

but i guess you don't ask me. :(

that's ok, as long as they don't start resting on their
laurels... i really loved Metroid Prime, i liked Metroid
Prime 2 as well, but i'm not even that excited about
Metroid
Prime 3 because it just looks like more of the same again.
i
will pick it up if the zones look good/inspire me
(and if the bosses aren't harder than the ones in Metroid
Prime 2), but it seems to me like they're pushing it a bit.

Actually my excitement for MP3 is low too. Artistically it
looks exactly like MP1 and 2. At least RE5 has a very
distinct look to it, you couldn't mistake it for RE4. This
is why I personally disagree with Nintendo's direction. The
art is suffering because the horsepower isn't available to
push it forward. Metroid Prime pretty much maxed out the
power in the GC/Wii already.

The advance previews were just as worrying. They actually
compared to opening sequence to HALO, of all games. Guuuuh.

And I saw a screenshot of a group of horribly designed alien
characters that looked like allies. I NEVER, EVER want any
allies in these Metroid games. Being alone on a remote alien
world is the whole appeal.

As for RE, this new style is only one game old, and on new
hardware I'm sure they're going to take it to the next
level. See how many black dudes are attacking Chris? Leon
never had to deal with that shit. Never more than a handful
of Ganados at the same time. So I'm thinking maybe this game
will be more of a ''run for your life'' deal than RE4. I
dunno

metal gear solid 1 2 3 4
halo 1 2 3
resident evil 1 2 3 4 5

ikaruga

i think i'm stumbling across some kinda profound
something-or-other here.

Yeah. These characters are just... bosses that you kill and
then you move on. They don't die in your arms telling you
their life story in a glorious burst of melodrama, like
Mantis and Wolf, and they don't show their human side, like
Fortune.

I got the sense that maybe they weren't evil, maybe their
intentions were mysterious but had something to do with The
Boss' good intentions, or maybe we'd find out why they were
such tortured souls... but no, they just blew up and that
was it.

Shame. I thought The Fury looked cool and could have had a
great backstory. SPACE IS THE PLACE

Johnny Sasaki and his explosive diarhea > The Boss

No really The Boss was like, almost too good to be in a
videogame.

Yeah, they kind of feel like they're just obstacles like any
other soldier.. a sort of mid-boss made to look cool instead
of be important to the story. Plus they give powerups in the
form of new "powers" (camos), but they could easily have
been integrated and explored better with some kind of
personal reason for doing what they do...

i liked The End, because the battle was fun and spread
out... i really disliked most of the characters in MGS3
though.... some things were extremely over-the-top, plastic
action figure like.... especially the big volto guy...
forgot his name... oh how i hated that character.... and the
stupified metal gear showdown...
is it possible to bring back the intensity of MGS1? think
not.

Fighting The End was the only really good bit of MGS3 and
even then it wasn't as good as fighting Sniper Wolf or
whoever it was in the first one.

I couldn't feel any more different, ha! Whenever I play
MGS3, I use that dirty trick to kill The End while he's
sitting on the docks in his wheelchair. Then later on in his
place, you fight 3 huge Ocelot units. The End is too easy to
figure out and he's a sitting duck once you do. Those Ocelot
units are fun to play mindgames with, stalking around
putting your stealth skills to good use. Best part of the
game for me, and it's totally optional.

As for Volgin, I loved him, for all the reasons you listed!
There are a ton of parodical story and gameplay elements in
MGS3, and Volgin is like the ultimate caricature of every
batshit insane supervillain ever. He's almost operatic in
his psychosis. Unlike the wasted Cobra members, Volgin
fulfilled his role in the game perfectly.

okay... it's all subjective isn't it? maybe i was too much
hoping for a 'believable' militaristic scenario like mgs1
had. that in combination with the really dramatic characters
(the freaking ninja cutscenes!) made it the perfect game
back then... now instead of going into more detail
obsessedness, the production team sadly decided to turn
everything just slightly into plastic. i could have almost
lived with their vision of an uglily modified fantasy
prototype hind helicopter in the sixties soso... but having
that much of them, respawning like regular soldiers, plus
all these flying platforms... instead of one big evil MI24
Hind D... totally overdone! things like that and the
super-stereotypic villain characters are in my eyes just
loveless
...
now from the mgs4 trailers.... it *appears* that they're
further expanding into overall aesthetic lushness...
hopefully they take their time and plot out cool bad guys
too....

All good points. Really, all the MGS games are so wildly
different in so many ways... it can be very polarizing.

I also think MGS1 has the best presentation, storytelling
and ''mood'', but as a game and adventure, MGS3 is my
favorite. Length and size-wise, it's a sprawling odyssey
compared to the short and small first two games, and that in
conjunction with the new style of storytelling works great
within the context of the series. Remember, the story MGS3
is telling us is really The Legend of Big Boss, who was
always mentioned in the series as the ''ultimate soldier'',
even above Solid Snake. But we didn't know much about his
exploits, we just constantly heard about how awesome he was.
Folk stories and legends get exaggerated over time, and his
mission was definitely the stuff of legend. He did
everything you can expect the ultimate alpha male to do-
conquered nature, beat a supervillian, inherited a symbolic
mythical title, and got all the chicks. One was really hot
and he had sex with her, and I bet you she came 30 times.
And The Boss' story and learning more about Ocelot's origins
was just enough story and pathos. I was more affected by
MGS3's conclusion than the other two.

I would have been very disappointed if we just got a game
that felt like Metal Gear Solid 1: Jungle Edition. I thought
it was a great usage of creative license. But I also don't
think you need to worry about seeing this approach again in
MGS4, which isn't dealing with a legend we'd only heard
about, but characters and a story arc we're very familiar
with already. And a protagonist that's essentially on his
deathbed. I bet MGS3 wasn't at all indicative of what MGS4
will be like.

But again, it's not like you can compare, say, MGS2's
post-modern philosophic approach to MGS3's more basic story
of human triumph and tragedy, so yeah, it's all subjective,
all the games have totally different themes.

what i really would love to see is a shiny new Rise of the
Robots... the game itself was total bollocks even back
then... but the theme and music were super great.... usually
don't like beat em ups.... but they could do something like
a mix of a 3d beat em up with ultar-highly detailed,
customizable robots which could hack into eachother trying
to knock out their cpu's or so... a la system shock... an
integrated hacking puzzle minigame.... which would be
integral part of the play....

can't wait for this one. famitsu says it's not due until
2009, but if that's what it takes to make a decent
follow-up, i'll be patient.

resident evil 4 was a sequel so good that i couldn't go back
and play the old games after playing it - it just made them
completely obsolete in every sense. i was kind of
disappointed that the Wii version went for the PS2 graphics
rather than the GC graphics - then again it was a $30 game
so i should have expected such.

the RE: Umbrella Chronicles looks like a good way to pass
the time, at least worth a rent just because we'll see
settings and characters from Zero through Code Veronica
re-rendered, some new backstory, more work by people from
Clover Studio (Okami, RE4) and it will be nice to see a Time
Crisis style rail-shooter on the Wii since most shooters
have made little sense on the Wii with their control
schemes.

My favorite part of the AI in this game is how they actually
latch while running without the pausing they did for a lunge
in RE4 when they reached you. Makes me think they'll bring
back defense items from the RE1 remake. It also seems
there's more environment interaction, as one part shows
Chris (if i saw correct) pulling a pillar from beneath a
platform and letting it collapse on people. Plus the enemies
are pure Nubians, so dark that their eyes glow. Coupling
that with the way your eyes adjust to lighting when going
from indoor to outdoor should make for some outright
creepiness in the shadows.

I agree that RE4 was a different type of terror - more of a
psychological terror than a shock terror. Hitchcock always
said that suspense is much more satisfying than shock, and
it's true in this series. The fact that you could be
completely surrounded and hearing and watching droves pile
in while you're cornered is definitely a discomforting
feeling. Plus that Silent Hill-inspired music is a welcome
change from the old orchestral scores.

Besides, the courtyard maze and the rain by the church
scared the shit out of me. More than RE has done for me

Same. One of the coolest moments during my gaming career
came during that thunderstorm... walking up the hill to the
church, can't see 3 feet in front of me in the rain, then
the lightning flashes and I see the silhouettes of those
mutant dogs at the top of the hill. It was a shock, thought
that area was safe. Great moment.

I, however, still have no problem playing the old,
''archaic'' Resident Evils. I went back and beat them all a
couple of years ago, one after another with RE4. The
prerendered backgrounds, dramatic camera angles and the
exploration still hold up and don't have much in common with
RE4, so playing RE4 didn't spoil them on me. The Gamecube
version of RE is a visual masterpiece.

Oh yeah good call with the music. I love the ethereal theme
plays in safe zones. Next thing to fix is the horrible
cutscenes.

I found RE4 vastly more scary than the previous games.
Hearing the chainsaw start up nearby when you have bugger
all ammo left was terrifying. Now I'm very good at the game
(actually have 5 stars on a fair few of the mercenaries
levels) it's no longer scary, but as a n00b it was.
