Remember Illfates?

I just saw him on the corner of Pike and Broadway drumming.
His sexy girlfriend was with him but neither of them are
looking very 'sexy' these days. Forrest a.k.a. illfates and
his girl are very skinny, and homeless looking. Forrest
had sores on his face and was kinda shuffling his feet. His
girl was also shuffling about and had a pretty bad sounding
cough. When I saw them, I thought about approaching them
but then I decided to just walk on by. I wasn't even sure
if he'd recognize me anymore honestly.

A year ago he was doing shows around here and producing
music. He even got me a gig once. but his junk habit seems
to have gotten the better of him.

Just say "no" to smack kids.

if that's real, then he got what he deserved, in all
honesty. he was completely aware of what he was getting
into. a rock star he is not.

That's shit, but it's also deserved in a way. That doesn't
mean he doesn't need or deserve help.

He was cool and made good music.

They were both on heroin, right?

i have no sympathy for anyone who willingly takes hard
drugs, but if he's still able to contribute to society in
some way then he probably deserves some help. otherwise he's
just doing what he wants to do and that's fine.

for him, 'help' might mean just another needle. if someone
is helped in one way when they want it in another, isn't
that selfish on our part? maybe i'm just in a bad mood.

Not really: Sometimes helping someone means hurting them a
bit.

I believe yes, they were both smoking heroin. i remember he
said they would never shoot it, but who knows. i didn't
look for or notice any needle tracks and i didn't stop to
chat with them either.

I don't mean that as in "give him another needle," but you
may have to lock him up in a room for a while.

Don't be an idiot. Getting hooked is not so simple. And at
that point it is a *medical* problem.

If your dad were a depressed man and got hooked on prozac,
would you say the same things?

oh, i didn't know he got addicted to heroin through a health
problem. that's really tragic. :(

No I mean, once you get hooked, you're fucked. and if you're
life sucks, you have no way out.

Heroin hasn't been used medically for 100 years, as far as I
know.

So my analogy was off. But mostly I was preying on the
negative image of drugs which is pushed on us.

Anyway, I feel sorry for the guy. He probably just played
around with heroin without really realizing the potential
damage. No one expects to get fucked like that..

I have full sympathy. Drugs are tremendously powerful.

well, maybe it was how he was raised by his parents, in
which case he really couldn't help himself. he needs a
loving figure who can explain why drugs are wrong.

started drugs in the first place?

sorry I went sortof ape shit; I'm taking a break from work
since something I can't solve is frustrating me..

Anyway, it's just that he seemed like a good, creative dude,
and there aren't many of those, and I'm said he succumbed to
a drug habit. It's like getting an STD when you could have
prevented it with a condom; sure, you were dumb, but it
still sucks MASSIVELY.

my fault for peeing anger all over the place. I just happen
to know a lot about addictions and how they are mismanaged,
and it's a very sad story.

I'm sure lots of kids with caring parents who told educated
them as well as they could about the dangers of drugs still
end up hooked. It's a bit more complicated than that.

from dictionary.com:

To evade, as by circumlocution: skirted the controversial
issue.

Skirting basically means staying on the periphery (and
sometimes ignoring facts) rather than directly addressing an
issue.

The context the phrase was used in here wasn't actually very
appropriate.

Because DM can't possibly be skirting an issue that isn't
even part of the topic of conversation. The origin of the
drug addiction wasn't raised until you accused him of
skirting the issue :P
