hey guys, i just got a wii this morning and i have a little question for those with wiis as well. is it supposed to make a lot of noise when it turns on? we're talking dreamcast-level noise here. other than that loud booting noise it's fine, though.

also, any games you guys can recommend?

Can't say mine is noisy, but that could be because I don't have one.

although it varies with each specimen, women can make lots of noise when they're turned on. some scientists think it's a way to have more men join the game. a good old "the more the merrier" so to speak.

games i like to play, apart from the classic master/slave and doctor/patient games, is the what i call jump-the-rabbit game.

i heard the trama center was just a remake with a few new operations. so if you played it for the ds you really arent going to be missing much if you skip this one. if you get a weeks rental on paper mario you will have plenty of time to beat it, no point in throwing down too much cash for it.

its not noisier than any other piece of technology ive used. if its making enough noise to where you are questioning it, you may want to trade it out if the store has another one.

how about if it makes this noise when you turn it on?
CRRRANK. CRUNK. CHK-CHK-CHK. and then after that it's perfectly fine. if i didn't consider myself the luckiest man alive just to find a wii this morning, then maybe i'd return it. but wiis are still next-to impossible to find here.

i wanna go home and play with my wii!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, that noise doesn't "sound" too good, although my dreamcast has always made that loud crunchy sound and to this day works like a charm. Did I mention its a first-generation DC? Granted, Sega and Nintendo are different companies, and the DC is widely known to be noisy. If I were you I'd try to get an exchange from the store just to be on the safe side. It's probably fine, but if you've got, say, a 14 day period to return it, now's the time to do so.

As loud as a Dreamcast? My Dreamcast sounded like a Star Wars space battle when I played it. It was terrifying, but it still works. If my Wii was as loud as that, I would take it back. But I don't know if other Dreamcasts are as loud as mine. In my experience, the Wii is not nearly as loud as the 360 so I don't worry about it.

If you're worried, take it back if possible, nothing to lose.

PARDON? YOU'LL HAVE TO SPEAK UP. I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER MY DREAMCAST.

update: i've been in contact with a home-dweller and they've reassured me that the wii hasn't been making any more noises. it may have been a false alarm.

new question: which way do you put in discs? i put in wii sports with the data side facing towards the power light and it worked, and then i put in my gamecube copy of lego star wars (original trilogy edition) with the data side facing away from the power light and it worked as well. or maybe my memory's busted. seemed strange to me at the time.

i'm a totally lame Honest Gamer, i'm afraid, so no chipping or modding for me.

i'll probably grab breath of fire 2 whenever it's released in north america. metroid comes out on monday and super metroid on the monday after -- definitely looking forward to those.

i have the sonic mega collection so i don't have to bother with the two sonics, which are, admittedly, two of my most favourite video gameses.

i spend more time playing virtual console games (with the godly classic controller) than i do actual wii games!

My favorite games on the VC are Super Castlevania IV and its virtuosic soundtrack, Dynamite Headdy, and SHINING FORCE. I remember a big chunk of my usual parties, I'd use Gong, Zylo, Earnest, Hanzou, Musashi, Guntz, Tao, Arthur... some other guys... dunno if it was the best possible party but I fucking rolled over motherfuckers. Zylo wish his blazing speed could run ahead and lay waste to their front lines singehandedly. THE WOLFMAN COMETH MOTHERFUCKERS WHOOOO

Why do you regret getting Star Fox 64? That game is a blast.

Although I don't personally pay money for ROM dumps that don't even offer online play or leaderboards, I think the VC is a great thing for young'uns, those with scruples, and those without modded Xboxes. But there needs to be more hidden gems. Maybe the stuff that REALLY deserves a second life and more exposure will get it after the supply of popular stuff gets exhausted. Fucking Capcom ripping people off by releasing two similar Street Fighter games weeks apart from each other when they could have put out UN Squadron or Demon's Crest or something. Then they've got like X-men Mutant Apocalypse, but I guess licensed stuff like that can't happen. The legal stuff sucks sooooo much. To think we could be playing online Goldeneye or Perfect Dark if not for this legal bullshit. Fucksticks.

my computer is so crappy that it can't even run nes games properly. think about it. and i don't plan on getting a new computer ever since i only use it for writing and net surfing.

so for me the vc is a godsend.
i'd say the best dude in shining force is domingo (sp?), the jellyfish monster that hatches out of an egg. i mean, he's a flying mage who takes damage like a steel tank.

secretly my favourite warrior is jogurt.

about licensed stuff: konami has renewed their license on old tmnt games *just* for the vc, which to me is a good sign. the bad news is that they cost 100 points more.

still, it bodes well for the future. and don't forget that some lode runner game that was previously japan-only was finally released here due to the vc.

Can't run NES games, that's hard to believe. Alternately you could download dreamNES, it has every NES game and runs perfectly on any Dreamcast, without modding. But I mean, don't do it. That's evil. But if someday you BECOME evil... you could totally do that.

1) i don't find the sound bites as hilarious as i should. 2) the graphics are really drab. 3) the controls are far too convoluted for my tastes. we're talkin' counter-intuitive here.

  things i like:
  1) the characters are full of exuberant personality. 2) you have to beat it all in one shot. 3) great title screen.
i just don't think it aged as well as nostalgia-seekers would hope. this was my first time playing it since i had missed out on it during the n64 days.

i bought mario kart 64 and tecmo bowl. i'd get more but i'm pissed cuz i had a nes simulator on my phone with 50 games but it got stolen earlier this year so i don't really feel like paying for the few they even offer. i only bought the points cuz i swear i seen they had nhl 99 on there, which of course they don't. but i do actually have a 64 and the nhl 99 game cartridge i just don't have a controler.
