Argh...

The only decent music retail chain in the UK has folded
completely. It is a sad day for the high street.

A sad day indeed. They were really good for decent books
and films as well as music (used to be real bargains in
Fopp).

Yeah - the amount of brilliant stuff I got there, just
because it was a fiver or something and on display. You
can't really do that with online stores, good as they are.

my mate works at the one in edinburgh. after a few weeks of
random shop closing and people in vans just turning up and
taking stock he went in to work yesterday and they got an
email saying that they wouldnt be getting paid on pay day
(but at some point in the future) and that they were all on
indefinate paid leave. hes fucked.

The future (and possibly present) is digital sales. It
wouldn't surprise me if places like HMV suddenly set up some
sort of terminal whereby people can bring in their mp3
player and choose from a large selection of titles to
download directly. Licensing could be a pain, but they've
got the money to do it.

And yeah, I know you could just say "why not do it from
home", but plenty of people still buy cds directly from
stores like this when they could order them online, so I
reckon its more than feasible.

CD's are definitely on the way out though.

What's that book where advertising is transmitted directly
to your brain?

I ask because I was going to say I'm waiting for terminals
where it downloads directly into your head, and it reminded
me of that book.

I'm very skeptical about downloads being better than CDs.
There's a spontaneity with physical records, that you just
can't have on itunes music store. I can't imagine I'd ever
splash out a fiver on some random release on the internet
without hearing it first; wheras I would, and do, with
CDs...

Ah Fopp. I remember slowly building up my Sonic Youth
collection from you and your £5 classic record section.
Sigh.

They weren't that fucking good. I built up my Doors and Pink
Floyd collexions years ago with £6 CDs at H.M.V.

Ok, pirating then. I hate pirating!

I buy as much of the music as I can. I'll admit I have a few
albums on mp3, but I intend to buy them at a later date when
I have the money (one of them costs $50 at the cheapest).
Mp3s are good for sharing your own music if you don't intend
to release it, but just want to bring some joy to people or
something like that...

that's really shit news. only a couple of months ago a fopp
store opened up in my hometown, and now gone.

along with mp3s and the like, supermarkets are another,
frequently overlooked, cause of the decline of the record
shop, and decline of the mainstream music industry - as they
only seem to stock the 'top 10'.

Our supermarkets are being bought over by American
companies... it's their policy to stock utter shite.
