Wil contemporary artists stand the test of time

A lot of 60s and 70s artists are still popular today - The
Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones - just to mention a
few. Which artists from the 90s and 00s do you think people
will still be listening to in 20-30 years? Any IDM artists?
Radiohead and Beck are the first that I can think of,
experimental enough to represent something unique, but still
popular enough to live on. Any thoughts?

People thought the Velvet Underground and The Stooges were
shit at the time, by the late seventies they were "cool"
bands to drop as an influence. (Not that I'm a big fan of
them myself.)

I don't think we can really tell maybe (hopefully) there
will be another sea-change like punk or acid house which
will make people see music differently anyway.

surely aphex twin yo.

im sure there are quite a few bands/artists that will still
be played in 30 years time..it aint all that bad even if it
appears that way. idm pioneers will be remembered for sure
as it goes for any genre really.

i think in a decade or so some people may look back at IDM
and realize its influence, or consider the meager seeds of a
much greater genre we have yet to see.

i have a feeling that cat power may have more play in the
future. certainly primus as well.

nine inch nails will likely make it too.

don't forget to take into account the musicians you DON'T
like - i'm sure shit bands like creed will still have play
just because they sold records, though honestly i think
radio will be obsolete in about 50 years.

offline Sclah from Freudian Slipmat on 2007-06-14 20:29 [#02093654]

I think people will acknowledge IDM as a genre that pushed
the limits of what is possible to do with computers in music
- more than the music itself. The ground work will live on,
but the music itself will only serve as examples. But I
dunno ^_^

ancient in the future, while bjork will be a golden oldie.
believe it.

no I don't reckon, no question.

theres no culture associated with the music of the 2000's.
at least not anything with any substance; nothing that looks
outside the box of an artists ego.

its an obvious obvervation, even if u did beat me at chess 4
year ago!

the past genre is ALWAYS revered. it takes time. you cannot
predict which direction the forerunners will take.

A LA APHEX! why are ppl obsessed with him? the answer is
obvious. he dictates the direction. and we as fans are a
priveledge to see the man and his friends progress.

ART is not just about "one" sense. get the fuck with it, or
die and fucking well drown.

thats true, you can only know the difference by knowing
something from experience, im glad that i went off the rails
for a while because now i can appreciate it. same goes with
all habits and tastes.

the subjective opinion can be all important but at other
times have no importance at all. it is the ability to change
perspective in the given circumstances that surely has the
most important value.

only can u find the balance within yourself.

yeah! that could be a laugh and a half. might even be a fair
contest :)

i place a lot of value on balance these days. i even realise
sometimes that some 'positive' experiments i have
undertaken, namely vegetarianism, no booze, no coffee, are
in themselves extremist behaviour.

i work part time in a liquor store. how does that fit in
with being a non-drinker? anyhow i was talking to a customer
last night, an italian guy, all about fresh pasta, risotto,
complimentary wine, and good company, thinking to myself,
yeah thats where its at. guidelines are good and well, but
unmovable rules and opinions can really limit the scope of
life.

"balance" isn't a see-go middle-of-the-road stance, it's an
oscillating understanding constant.

it's not a mocking here today gone tomorrow, it's the flow
of a natural state. it's the understanding of the extremes
and finding a comfortable balance in between. this balance
is different for everyone who "dares" to understand, but
it's there for all of us.

nowadays when ppl express an opinion i understand it as
that, and why, and why theyve said it. so emotionally it
doesnt affect me.

im 34 years old and ive never felt better. BUT i know i can
feel a lot better. by educating myself more, understanding
more, and just being aware that education is life long.

i can say from experience that its very hard to stand still
and keep balance when youre standing in the breakers on the
coast. i think thats a pretty good analogy.

i know what you mean about opinions as well. thats why i
dont argue with people. sometimes people cling to their
opinion as being the 'right way' of seeing things, but i
dont see any point in doing that. my opinions are open to
change, im always on the lookout for a new model :)

take the analogy of seven blind men trying to identify an
elephant when none of them have ever encountered one before.
one man grabs the trunk and says an elephant is a python.
another grabs its tail, and says an elephant is a flywhisk.
a third man grabs an ear, and says the elephant is a fan.
and so on. of course, not one single man is correct, but the
combined opinions of all 7 blind men presents a much more
accurate approximation of what an elephant truly is!
