That will mess up your biological clock badly or maybe you already have it all screwed up.

i'm usually too stressed to sleep before classes start again in september, and before my exams (i have already spent two restless nights following each other before an exam, pretty bad but i can't seem to do anything about it)... apart from these (rather unpleasant) periods, i'm ok.
having spent a restless night doesn't feel as bad as having slept a few hours (but not enough) for me though.

my biological clock is more efficient than my alarm clock for waking me up in the morning.

Boring but simple solution; get your ass up in the morning. Through ten years of studying and shift work, I've had big problems falling asleep. I started in a new job some months ago, and have to get ut at 7 every morning. It's hard, and I always feel like I hate the world from 7:00 to 7:10, but I'm getting more and more used to it, and sleep like a baby every night. Now, I'm at work for the first day after a week of vacation with no sleep and heavy drinking, and I feel like a total wreck. I might actually be dead.

drinking before you sleep is a terrible idea. It causes really fucked up sleeping patterns. It might work temporarily but it's never a good idea really.
the best thing you can do is go to bed as soon as you feel sleepy, make sure the curtains/blinds are closed so the room is as dark as possible, and keep any external noise to a minimum. Often you'll be lying there awake just thinking for hours, but resist the temptation to get up and do something, just keep lying there with your eyes closed, and try and empty your mind of any thoughts you are having and relax your muscles and breathe deeply.
If all else fails, have a warm bath like Paul suggested, or read a little bit. Try and avoid music or literature or TV that will stimulate your brain too much, and any vigorous exercise right before bed, probably including a wank as it'll probably wake you up more rather than get you ready for a sleep. Try and do lots of exercise in the day though. Also try and get into a regular pattern. Force yourself to wake up in the morning at 8 or 9 or whatever, even if you've not had much sleep, and go to bed as soon as you're tired, if not earlier.

... If I forced myself to get up at 8am and go to bed as soon as I was tired, I'd be going to bed at 8.30am ;)
But your answer was particularly in-depth and sensible.

Yeah when life gets good and exciting (talking to you tools) sometimes i couldnt fall alsleep til 3-4am, then off to work by 7am. Not much you should do about it, just have that wank and try to read a magazine/newspaper, pop in a movie and let time take its course. You can train your body to do many things.

I think insomania is a natural thing that happens in a random sort of way, just deal with it. happened to me last week, awake for 26 hours on a week night/day
