Reason .rns swap meet

I'm looking for help in all areas of music production:
composition, arrangement, instrument choice, mixing, eq,
compression....

Here are some typical, unfinished tracks of mine. (The .rns
files were made with Reason 2.5 and only use the factory
sound bank.)

jun-03-2007 mp3 rns

jun-04-2007 mp3 rns

One thing in particular I have trouble with is getting a
powerful, wobbly bass sound. Also, my drums always seem a
bit flat.

If anyone else would like to share .rns files I'd love to
see how others use Reason.

for drums i'd recomend using the scream distortion, set it
to tape, put the two knobs all the way up and the damage
knob to around the 5th notch

the one i wanted to post won't fully work unless you've got
the jungle warfare refill :/

I think if you go to File->Song Self-Contain Settings and
check all, it will make the .rns file self-contained. I'm
not sure though since I've never used the feature.

if it's from a refill you wont be able to self contain the
thing, and the exporter is the one who should do that anyway
so... youll have to extract the sample somehow from the
refill and the export it.

or give us a link to steal the refill

also i think it only works for rps files. but i'm not sure

ok i hid the stab a little (it sounded too dominant in the
mix to my ears) with added reverb and some eq. and then i
compensated the eq and then boosted the bass a bit.

also i may have fucked up the drums, but maybe I just added
a lil more punch to it, i used roygiv's suggestion
moderately. anyway i think it sounds a lil bit better, at
least with my headphones.

did i fuck up your song?did i fuck up your song?

i think a fade in effect in that piano with the delay could
turn out neat, didn't try really.

Shit, I can't open the file. I'm guessing it's because you
have Reason 3.0? I only have 2.5 :(

i have 3.0 also so i guess there's no point in putting a rns
up with none of the breaks

this is what i was gonna put up

Damn. I'm curious how you do your breaks, especially that
sound where it sort of sounds like the pitch is whizzing
downward.

Maybe I'll cave and buy 3.0. It looks decent enough.

I cant imagine using Reason now with anything less than
version 3. All the Modulation capabilities alone make it
totally worth it. For what it's worth, you should check out
this guy. All his tracks are used with Reason. From
my experience, he is one of the most accomplished users I've
ever come across.

Old Track (Search and proceed and it should find the
samples)

Use the Matrix sequencer for everything.

I use v3 now so I suppose theres not much point in uploading
any rns files for you. I havent really found that much more
functionality in3 compared to 2.5... I'm sure its there but
I havent really used it, i wouldnt say its essential to buy
if you dont feel too expert with 2.5 yet

Are the synth sounds you use sampled from another source or
do they come from the mälstrom/subtractor? I'm really
curious about them, they sound great...

Regarding Reason 3 and Reason in general, it's important to
remember that the software was built on an approximation of
a hardware setup. With that being said, the true strength
is in its modularity.

Just like in Flash, how the best designs use only the first
frame of the timeline, some of the most powerful shit I have
seen doesnt even require you to hit play to appreciate the
song. In this situation, hitting play usually just adds
some extra flair to an already interesting composition...

Here's a question I have about routing. I always use a
Redrum for my main drum kit. I end up wanting to effect each
drum sound separately: compress the kick, reverb the snare,
really short delay on the hihats to fatten them up and make
them sound more metallic, etc.. But then I end up with each
drum sound having its own fader on my master mixer, which is
annoying. Let's say I want to do a small amt of reverb on
the entire drum kit... or I want to do a filter effect on
it.

What would be a good way to route the drums? Maybe have all
my individually drum hits (post their individual effects) go
into a secondary "drum mixer", and the output of that mixer
goes through the effects that effect the entire drum kit,
and then to the master mixer?

I never really use sends, even though both the Redrum and
the mixer have this feature.

Tips?

For example, in Reason 3, all without automation and all
without hitting play you can have a combinator that contains
the following:

----------------------------------------------------
-An LFO from a Subtractor Synth that modulates all
the patterns in a Matrix.

-These patterns in turn all contain different CV wave
forms you draw in. They are split --> one going out to the
panning in the embedded mini mixer at the top of the
combinator, one going out the OSC rate of a Maelstrom synth
(which is next as we move up the Combinator stack)

-The wave form of the Maelstrom is variable step
waveform, this waveform goes out an Modulates a percussive
FM Subtractor sound that is already having its pitch
modulated by second Matrix. The output of the Subtractor
goes BACK into the Maelstrom's Filter set and gets some comb
filtering going on...

-THIS goes out the Maelstrom for a second time and
now into a RV7000 reverb. The reverb is modulated by third
and fourth Matrix --> It's dry/wet levels are modulated, as
is the Echo Time in the Echo Algorithm of reverbs edit
mode.

-Finally, this goes out to the mini mixer that has
its panning already modulated by the inverse cv signal of
the first Matrix.

-This can all be flattened and hidden inside ONE
combinator and repeated in as many variations as your
computer can handle.
-----------------------------------------------

So what does this do and what does it sound like?

- This is an instant semi-generative FM percussion track,
with variable time signature, panning, and spatialization.
You could say it is Autechre influenced in that respect.
All of this starts occurring the moment you open your file,
all without ever needing to hit play on the transport.

When I use the Redrum, I always patch each channel out to a
respective channel in a seperate mixer. This gives me more
control and more options, as well as the ability to modulate
levels and panning for each hit.

Here is the audio for the example below.

I disregarded some steps (thereby making it actually easier)
and I included a noisey pad and a simple bass synth that is
also "randomly" generated

use the sends, they are very useful.

what you said can be done easily, add a global reverb to the
machine, then add whatever effect as send and you can
control the amount of the send effect individually.

if you route single samples to a mixer channel you could
have a drum machine with up to 6 different effects each
affecting the samples individually through the send knobs in
the mixer and the redrum.

fuck did that makes sense? my english gets worse and worse.
anyway.. in short, my tip is: use sends (mixer and redrum)
and patch samples to separate channels.

yes, use sends

so do you all get a much more quiet thing when you export?
how do you deal with that, i always try to get every channel
below red because i'm told red is the boogeyman of software.
but when i export i get a very quiet file. and i need to
turn the volume way up.

You can basically just use the TB Synth preset Subtractor
patch (in the MonoSynths folder).

jkd-daft mp3 rns

Note that the rns file doesn't contain much. The mp3 was
made by turning the drums on and off and tweaking the filter
cutoff, resonance and and filter env amt knobs on the
Subtractor.

so instead i use nuendo and control reason via the internal
