what phone do you have?

-if it's a mobile, most sony ericssons have a good recorder.

if it's a land line, you can buy devices which will connect
inbetween the phone handset and the phone itself

also just so you know, it is actually illegal to record a
telephone conversation without the explicit permission of
the other party or parties

maybe cheapest - assuming you have a mic - to buy a bit of
skype credit and record it on your computer?

i had a small clip-on shirt mic about 1 inch long i used to
record on my old minidisk player, just taped it to the
earpiece

Me and my mate used to make crank calls as teenagers and we
recorded them like this:

First he got this old landline phone that nobody used
anymore and dismantled the reciever, and soldered the two
wires that were attached to the speaker to one end of a
regular cable audio jack (like a guitar lead). We plugged
the lead into a tape recorder with a mic input. Then made
crank calls on the other phone downstairs, while this set up
was plugged in upstairs. Much better than recording the
other phone with the crap cheap mic we had.

when i used to make the silly calls i would just put my cell
on speaker phone and record through a mic onto the computer.
quite simple, very cheap, and decent quality
