xlt has always been a good laugh and a nice source for info
about new releases, i wouldn't know about half the good
stuff coming up if it wasn't for this place. i don't think
you should take the board so seriously, talking about "the
death" of a genre etc., it gets very silly and inane and the
debate kind of plays out between huge, awkward posts that
none but a few bother to flap through anyway. there's a time
and place for those discussions too, i guess, but i don't
think you should expect attaining any reasonable outcome
that you can hold yourself to. hey, this post turned out
pretty long too. arrrgh.

anyway, xlt is as it's always been as long as i've been
around. lots of waves and fluctuations in topics, richard
worship, afew incredibly annoying posters and lots of decent
ones. moderating away a few of the most nonsensical threads
wouldn't be bad, though.

I do agree. I don't blame the mods (and certainly not
myself, nossir), because it's way too hard for a group of
handsome nerds to suppress the kind of caustic insanity that
has come to define XLT. The balance we had between the
absurd and the serious is a difficult one to maintain. It
depends on many facotrs- current events/release and new
arrivals and the position of the planets and... yes, the
mods and their actions or lack thereof. I know I'm guilty of
cringing at topics and then doing nothing recently, when I
really should have.

Doesn't help that a lot of the mods, like Ceri said, stay
away because they either don't like electronic music anymore
(I hardly listen to any of it) or just don't like the vibes
here as much (I don't like the vibes here as much). We're
not paid a salary to moderate or anything, so why hang
around much to help out more if we're not as into it?
There's also the passage of time, naturally people aren't
always going to be posting 20-30 times a day forever...
definitely wouldn't hurt to get new mods. Maybe. I really am
a bit out of the loop. Whatever, I'm cool with everything, I
really don't think the current state is too bad or anything,
we've been having doomsday topics like these since... 2001.
At least I added to my though count. Hopefully the ''More
Stats'' link will be fixed someday.

A simple ban won't do, and as it's getting to be winter
here it'll be all the more tempting to stay in and write
"cunt" on your board during the long dark evenings.

God bless the shark. He's about 70% of whatever's still good
about this place.

Its not really doomsday talk now is it? we're just
discussing the current state of the messageboard and how to
improve it. If you don't really like the vibes and don't
really do much moderating anymore then i think you should
"resign".

There should be a new status saying: Honorary for all the
dryed out mods and for people who have contributed to the
site. And then just get all the inactive out of the way and
replace them with new ones - if you dont give a fuck
anymore, quit it.

hah I remember being warned and almost banned for making
threads about current affairs and politics...look at the
place now...hah hah... I am only here to keep up a few of
the mates that I made here...I may seem to be spamming a lot
but I know that what i make has limited appeal and this is
how i try and get feedback from those whose feedback I care
about...as far as IDM is concerned...well its gone the way
many prior bordeline cutting edge genres (genres that arent
so totally obscure and up their own arse that they are
unlistenable to practically everyone and neither do they
have a mass following falling somewhere in between) like
Industrial for one have gone...its been reduced to a
stereotype, as in a few signatures that come to define it
(in this case the click, the glitch, the drilly break)
become absorbed into the whole of the kaliedoscopic
technicolour headrush (yeah I am refering to puke) that is
music...and then anybody who ever even thought about using
one of these signatures, even in a passing dream...label
themselves as such with the ever helpful, tags and
keywords...personally I think the Analord and that analogue
release by Luke Vibert prior to that that I forget the name
of as it was so forgetable...was the official deathknell of
IDM...well thank god for that

who is the webmaster? I remember going to university when
the internet just started and all my cool down with the kids
friends would use ethernet which connected lots of people to
local raves, (hyperreal) and there was also authechre.nu and
joyrex.com. One of those became this site right?

offline bogala from NYC (United States) on 2007-05-12 00:39 [#02082584]

Analord the end? I have to disagree. I don't really
undertand your point? Its all new sounds. We need new sounds
and melodies. Music in the top 20 or indoe is so shit. I
think IDM is just getting started. There are no limits to
music. The less genre building the better. and if you thin
kidm is dead thean great. A dead nameplate. Thats good fro
creativity.. Of course people dont mind poaching ideas
from aphex and his ilk and that won't stop. Top 20 artists
stealing from underground artists.

Well i think Analord is the complete loop serpent biting its
tail etc it neatly reconnects to SAWI and all the Windows
and Bubblebaths...Untitled's etc...so no I dont necessarily
see it as genuinelly new sound...but my point is that for an
extremely diverse range of sounds the term IDM used to
encompass it was becoming hopelessly bottlenecked and
typified...people were becoming resistant to infusion of new
blood, I remember a time when anything coming from anywhere
other than UK was instantly termed as shit...especially
American stuff...and other tangential artists, though the
artists happily jammed together (okay I am talking about the
No Future, Tresor, Milleea Plateaux and other such stuff)
were not IDM enough...

When I heard the strings in Cilonen I thought it was very
new. The very distorted saws. Just different new ways of
presenting sounds. Subtle things in analord that were ground
breaking. I think its a good thing when a genre looses
steam. It means people can be creative without assholes
analyzing every move they make.

It must be so much easier being a rock musician. You really
have to reinvent the wheel in idm to keep peoples interest.

could you explain to me what's wrong with richard (or any
other 'idm' artist) producing the music he likes to produce
(analord) instead of releasing, from your point of view,
innovative stuff? is that what idm is about? hell no! 'idm',
to me, is about a couple of people putting the middle finger
to the music industry and doing stuff they like, whether
others like it or not. sometimes the result is innovative,
sometimes it isn't.

offline bogala from NYC (United States) on 2007-05-12 01:07 [#02082594]
Points: 5125 Status: Regular

Well, I think Rich probably doesn't care that much, but it
does seem that ( 1. you can't please everyone (obvious) and
(2. New sounds, shocking sounds are what hold interest.. Not
subtle ways of using new sounds in an old style like
analord. Or even more important, writing good tunes. Which
is what every other genre seems to aim for.

offline bogala from NYC (United States) on 2007-05-12 01:10 [#02082595]

tunes meaning melody. Idm is hand in hand with the "process"
more so than other forms of music. No that melody isn't
important.

what i don't understand is that while the
production-standards are getting higher and higher and, in
that sense, 'idm' is still developing as much as it was 10
years ago, people complain about the lack of innovation.
perhaps they're actually referring to creativity, because,
well, in that aspect things could be better. but that lack
of (apparent) real creativity is not new. there's as much
creative stuff being released as there's ever been. there's
just a lot more crap that's being released too. imo, people
are addicted to that creative stuff and want more and more.
but the real creativity remains a rarity (and always will),
ans so they're disappointed. that's not the problem of the
genre. that's the problem of the fanbase themselves. again,
imo.

You can't make everyone happy. Everyone is hearin in their
mind what they want to hear. Materializing the things you
imagine is another issue. Making things physical in this
world takes and effort and moeny. The potential of sounds
and songs that can be made is limitless really.Thats how I
see idm. Music without borders. So it will never die to me.

offline bogala from NYC (United States) on 2007-05-12 01:33 [#02082599]

Oh and production-standards. Digtial insturments are like
throwing your money away. You can never get better than
analogue. Nothing has really advanced in the last 20 years.
Better interfaces, but not better sound.

what i meant was that there's more possible nowadays. it's
easier to make complex structures. electronic music in that
sense is a lot more mature than it used to be.

did I say there was anything wrong with it? he could write
analogue polka jigs and I would still give it a shot...but
you cant deny that from say "I care because you do" to
"Drukqs", he kept pushing and surprising and shocking and
thrilling in a big big way with evey new
release...Analord..subtle changes and all is a retread...
but is that a bad thing? No, but it certainly stemmed the
flow of the new....
Personally as far as creativity as another way of saying
complexity comes...I think Gantz Graf was the
pinnacle...where do you go from there?

absolutely stupid conclusions about the tuss, aphex and all

why wont all of you simply get a job in life instead of
pissing those brainless ramblings about life etc lalala.

half of people here dont know what music is about anyway,
beeing obsessed only with richard d james, browsing discogs,
boomkats and similar shit, denying musical terms and arguing
about multiple personalities. the second half stopped
posting because instead something really creative there was
a sudden flood of lonely turps like tridenti, monoid and
similar sad little pricks.after which the board went down
like turd in fuckin toilet, leaving sad stinky remarks of
what it used to be. theres (maybe) 6 users knowing
something about hardware, less than 5 really interested in
software and 10 wise enough to listen an album for more than
a 45 seconds before switching to another slsk downloaded
playlists full of glitches faking draft 7.30.

and then you wonder what happened.

bottom line:play some fucking music and back off the
