I really hate how Future Music magazine have suddenly cottoned on to circuit bending and are now flogging it over all their mags like it's their idea. It's been around for decades and has only become "popular" due to resources on the internet.
Grr journalists grr.

I quite dislike circuit bending. I think a lot of this has to do with the fact I do know about electronics.
It winds me up that some people think they are somehow skilled because they can solder bits of wire and switches onto boards and get it to make funny sounds. In that video some of them seemed to appreciate that they didn't have a clue what they were doing, but I've read some articles where people think they are oh so clever cos they can solder and it makes wacky sounds.
My career is with electronics. I can actually design circuits and seeing people hack them around without a care in the world and with no idea of what they're doing is quite upsetting.
I can appreciate some of the sounds which are created, when used in context, but more often than note the result is a horrible mess. I guess they must record a lot of it then keep the few decent bits and erase the rest.
I think the general attitude of circuit benders annoys me more than some of the sounds they make.

Yeah definitely, I've had it for ages.
@Dave: Yeah, I used to love circuit bending. I mean, alright, it does make some fking awesome sounds, sampling bent kit is great. Also adding vactrols or OTAs to your boards for CV control is something I must do once I've got a modular.
But this is exactly it. You can do so much more with total DIY electronics. Just looking at some of the more logic based modular synth vids on YouTube, I'm amazed. I think you got me starting on this aswell as various kit manufacturers, so thanks a lot!
I also agree about the attitude. It's like "yeah within 10/20 years circuit bending is gonna be in every band" (I'm quoting a video of a circuit bender who was rambling on about the "noise element"). So what's the point? If it's gonna be so popular, why carry on with it? It was good when it was rare, but now I pick up Future Music and it's plastered over that, the new Wire Tapper CD's even got a track with a bent Speak & Spell in the background. It's common, and it's getting boring. Bent kit is nice to have, but what's the point in having 20+ pieces of bent gear. Pointless.

yeah *some* of the sounds are excellent. I don't begrudge them for creating great sounds, its more the mindset.
I'm glad you can appreciate what I'm on about.
How is the electronics going btw?

why is it upsetting to see people fiddling with electronics who dont understand them? are you afraid they will shock themselves?

Let me quote the girl just before half way through: "dealing with the insides of some instrument, and understanding what this electronic thing does"
She hasn't got a fucking clue what she's doing! Just because you can solder wires to it, don't think you understand it.
That's the sort of attitude that winds me up.

No.
Let me put it this way: I go bowling and get a strike. This is because I am lucky. However I tell everyone it is because I understand exactly what I'm doing like I'm an expert.
I have no idea what Lego has to do with anything tbh. If a kid made a Lego model and claimed to be a trained architect then that would perhaps be similer.
Maybe because I've spent years of my life learning about electronics I get annoyed by these young upstarts who seem to think they know what's what.
Leave the pro electronics to me, and I'll leave the gurning contest / laptop battle and phat beatz to you.

Very good thanks, slow but good. I'm mainly building the CGS (Ken Stone's) boards.
The only person in that video that really knows what they're talking about is Cynthia, but she's done barely any circuit bent modules, she only did her modified tabla and tanpur machines.
