What are you so offended about?

What is it with people getting so offended over words?
Take the whole Don Imus "scandal." Imus is an idiot. Anyone
who makes a racist comment is either a) Ignorant or b)
Joking... or perhaps both, as was the case with Imus.

Here come the sharks... That bloated windbag Al Sharpton and
that self righteous Jessie Jackson circling outside CBS
trying to get him fired. They love it. They love to do that.
They love having this "thing" that they can make an issue
of. So they try and execute their power through forms of
censorship. All this pressure to get Imus off the air...
it's a fucking witch hunt. They turned a blithering old
idiot on the radio into a monster, and people listend. And
this was after he apologized!

Instead of holding a press conference and demanding his
resignation, why didnt the team just shoot back: "Imus, you
got no right to talk, you look like a fucking gremlin and
your words have no class." Instead they ran into Al
Sharptons open arms and he milked this and turned it into a
media circus.

People, these words only have power if you give them power.
If everyone stopped being all wound up and tight assed over
non-threatening words, the world be be a better place. If
someone makes a stupid comment that could be taken as
racist, then you know what person is a moron, and just leave
it at that.

And don't even get me started about those minority groups
forcing the Taco Bell dog commercials off the air...

we should be beyond the racism in this time and age. it's
silly one must be careful what he/she says just so no one
gets offended over no reason. i think majority of world
population sees all people as equals. ofcourse there are
racist living in this society as well but it's silly the
whole society must be careful beacuse of the idiots. imo.

I agree completely.

I mean theres always going to be a few idiots that say
stupid things. Their words make them look bad, we don't need
to execute them at the stake for it, and we sure dont need
laws that would stop people from voicing their opinion...
even if it is moronic.

I'd never heard the term "nappy head" until I read about
this.

I still don't really know what it means.

No one outside of whatever buttfuck radius of that radio
station really gives a shit, but America, please keep
letting your ugly face slip from behind the smiley mask and
then wringing your hands about it whilst you try and stick
it back on. You look like even bigger twats than the rest of
the world normally takes you for.

He referred to a team of black basketball players as
"nappy-headed hos", on air.............

Is that both racist and sexist?

And he's been sacked.

I don't consider it censorship to take him off the air.

At worst it's good bussiness-sense, at best it's assuming
the moral high-ground.

I consider putting political pressure to fire someone on an
entertainment studio a form of censorship... even if it's
not government sanctioned.

Yeah what he said was bad, but it became much worse when
everyone took it so seriously and built it up and made him
into a monster when he was just a little insect.

Yes. I lived down south for a little while. While there are
many beautiful things about southern US (the warmth being
one, the food being another), the people there were far from
perfect. Racism was tolerated for the most part, and guys
were abusive to their girlfriends. It was why I didn't like
living there.

His original statement was an insult, nothing more than
that. He wasn't airing an opinion, therefore it's not
censorship.

I'm not aware of the details of what has happened
afterwards, but I think you run the risk of coming across as
an apologist.

Every time someone makes a statment that could be taken as
"racist" this marching band is going to come in and FORCE
them off the air! That amounts to censorship!

I've never heard Imus in my life, he's already apologized
for himself.... as I've said, I would have just publicly
told him off just like he did to the players. Imus was
dogshit, I would never apologize for him

But I do beleive people like having something to be offended
about, it gives them a power. And they swarmed and executed
that power over something basically trivial.

And if a black dude had made the same comment, you best
beleive Al Sharpton wouldnt have been picketing outside CBS.

I think you're assuming that everyone, like you, thought it
was trivial. Perhaps a large number of people (say, women
and black americans perhaps) found it highly offensive.

but WHY? Why get so offended at such an insignifigant radio
personality? He's obviously ignorant and stupid to make such
comments. Why waste such energy on him? that's what this is
about for me.

Any enlightend person of any race would see that he's just
another dumb bigot, or made a joke in really poor taste.
Just MOVE on, nothing more to see here. Don't listen to his
show. Better yet, call in and tell him off to his face
(ears).

These kind of people are always going to be around, the rest
of us can just move foward without them, and without
creating a circus every time something like this happens.

I guess the people involved don't see it as a waste of time
or energy....... the man is a broadcaster.

And how many enlightened people are there in your
neighbourhood? How many have you met in your life?

More importantly, is The Tuss RDJ?

I'm privlaged to live in a very racially mixed, liberal area
of California. I have met the occasional bigot, but again
that's just par for the course, and I don't give it another
thought. They're not worth my time.

Let's just agree that we both love Proem's Socially Inept,
and that more people in the world should be listening to
that right now.

Sharpton and Jackson are a hate mongers/ Its their living. I
hate the censorship of words. Big Time..If people didn't
want to hear Imus they could have changed the channel. Let
the market decide.. Thats real free speach.

but yeah, I believe it was a witch hunt. Sharpton saw an
opportunity. I suspect Imus is an asshole to a lot of people
and many in the entertainment business rallied to get him
off the air.

This reminds me of the Top Gear episode where they bought
cars to travel through southern America. Causing a big mess
when they decided to paint "Nascars Suck" and "Gay Freedom"
on their cars while going through Virginia.

I must agree with Cygnus. I've just come back from a month
travelling around the southern states of America. I knew
that race was much more of big deal there than in the UK,
but I hadn't quite realised to what extent.

I would say, however, that in most of the developed world,
most people are not particularly rascist. Although, to quote
the Avenue Q song of the same name, "Everyone's a little bit
rascist."

also, two things to check -

this

and frank zappa's opinions on the supposedly detrimental
affects of words.

(although i can see that this is completely different to the
PMRC - we're talking about the supposed disrespect towards a
race's culture and history, as opposed to the supposedly
contaminating effect of words)

i'd almost think that at one time the world actually was
flat, but that they got bored. and when they decided to put
the ends together they discovered they needed more land and
so they created another continent. supposedly there were
still some spare parts left.
