There are some interesting field recording albums by Toshiya Tsunoda. I dont really know much about the process itself though.

im thinking about using two condenser microphones to achieve stereo effect afterwards. of course we're talking about two phantom-powered xlr inputs for the mics.
and as for advices, good/bad spots ( in general), overall approach, etc.

if you want field recording techniques/rig suggestions here are some options
-extreme portability on a small budget- definitly want to get yourself a minidisc recorder and a Sony ECM-MS907 microphone. both can be purchased for under $100. The quality is great for the price you pay. Or if you dont want a minidisc check out some of those Zoom flash drive recorders.
-extreme portability on a larger budget- Go for the marantz line of flash recorders. They start at around $500 and they offer built in dual condesner mic preamps that sound decent. Not the most amazing preamps for the price, but the convenience and low noise of the recorder itself is fantastic. No moving parts, all flash based.
-clunky portability on a largerbudget with higher quality- Definitly want to think about getting an Mbox and a laptop. If you already have a laptop great, get an mbox and a pair of good condesners and you essentially have the same setup as a marantz except much higher quality. The preamps on the mbox are extremely good for $250, probably the best value out there.
Only issue is youll have to carry around your laptop with you and start/stopping recording is a bitch.
for microphone recommendations it totally depends on your budget, if you dont want to spend more than $200 on mics i recommend getting something like a pair of Oktavas or AKG C1000s . I usually dont like using stereo micrphones because 2 mono micrphones give me better control of the stereo image.
hope that helps

check out the world soundscape project.
i had a brief go with a tascam hd-p2[£700] and a at825 [£260]
they may be a little pricey for what you're after but they sound very crisp and clear. using the the recorder was a doddle, and just makes you want to record everything.

ah, tascam. nice, but ive heard a lot of mixed opinions about the pre-amps on it.
i was thinking about getting edirol r-4 as well, but fostex appeals to be sooo much more rigid. the feel of it, those screws on sides of unit.... ah.
next year or so, it will be mine anyway.sooner or later...
