I want a really quiet, fairly powerful computer. I bought a shuttle reflexion xpc because reviews said it was quiet, but its as noisy as an xbox 360 if not more. I want one that's quiet like a sega genesis. Is there such a thing? What should I get?
And every friggin time I wrote 'quiet' (except this one time) I accidently wrote 'quite' instead. I guess I could have just made each instance into 'quite quiet' without having to use the backspace, but chances are I would have accidently written 'quite quite' again)

How about a 'Dell Optiplex small form factor computer'. Fucking computers; I hate them until they start doing what I want.

That's awesome. I read about how someone who designed a super computer used liquid cooling once.
My T23 Thinkpad Laptop is completely silent, like a sega genesis as opposed to an xbox 360, with stats that are good enough for my use it seems. Actually I can hear it just a tiny negligible bit if I put my ear right next to it. But it sucks to run a lot of software on it and the keyboard sucks.
That shuttle computer is immediately noisy when I turn it on. You can change the fan speed from low to high in bios and ironically low is noisier. And it has another humming besides the fan so its like two annoying phasing frequencies (maybe the high fan frequency phases better, thus seeming lower volume).

Good point, but I can't install flash and stuff on it. It's completely loaded with malware too so I want to get rid of it.

Couldn't you just put one together yourself? That way you can pick all the hardware and save money.

I have such little know how. I basically have to buy one with everything I currently need, because damned if I know how to change out and reinstall anything. Based on my past experience attempting to do something simple like format the drive, it almost definately won't work.

Why don't you like the ambient noise of a computer? Do you dislike it that much to sacrifice raw processing power to escape it? Personally I love the drones of motors and fans and generators, and it helps cover up the telltale signs of impending tinnitus. That disquieting silence whenever I shut my PCs down...

I think I was permanently scarred working in the grocery industry being forced to listen to elton john and phil collins duet of barfing on eachother all day; now slightly irritating noises can send me into an uncontrollable primitive apelike rage where I want to grab all the cans of cambels soup in my mold covered cupboard and hurl them out the window at people's heads to see if they're real enough to make contact with them. Plus my refridgerator makes more than enough noise; now you made me start paying attention to it again, THANKS A LOT! I'm going MAD!! AAAAHH!!!

Is it basically that pentium III's are quiet and P4's and up get noisier?

build a system with core 2 duo or athlon dual-core. they're extremely energy efficient so they don't need a lot of cooling. the loudest thing in your system will be the hard drives...

Up until recently, my computer emitted sounds comparable to a weed-whacker. It was so much, that I could not use it for extended periods of time without going insane. The fan in the power-supply became maimed in some way that set it off balance, and so the times when that fan decided to come on (pretty much all the time), it ended up grinding away at whatever was closest. I finally got a new power-supply, and the new quietness from that area revealed to me the high-pitched whine of a failing hard-drive. Here, I did not hesitate. Now, with everything replaced and in good working order, the whole box is about as loud as one of those fans that move their heads and look back and forth - only a small one. It could still be considered a bit loud I suppose, but it is so much better than what it was.

Excellent; this is good information.
A soundproof box would be cumbersome and maybe make it overheat.
