I personally like drukqs, but each to their own, he does
have a couple of valid points.

I've got a huge amount of time for Simon Reynolds as a
writer and critic...His Energy Flash/GenerationE book is a
fucking good read; even Aphex gets his own few pages (which
SR once kindly let me pass on to other people on the old
Aphextwin mailing list..)...

...so he's cool with me...

But even he get's it wrong sometimes...;)...

(He's so right about Timbaland...that guy rocks..)..

Does he sometimes write for The Wire? I'm sure I've heard
something like that before..

offline jand from Braintree (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-16 23:57 [#00128742]

Yeah...he used to...

think he's gone freelance now...a column for Village Voice
etc...all sorts...

The Wire ain't really the same without him....it's still ok
but theres def something missing...

Good views generally, but he liked the P.O.D. album! And
Druqks was crap? At least he liked Taking Control yeeeeah
boy!

Nah, Timbaland doesn't rock. Simon Reynolds is kind of
stupid. I don't think he really listens very well to the
music. Gwety Mernans 'Gabba'? What the fuck is that shit?
Just seems to me that if you're are going to review
something, you should at least get the sound right. Stupid
ass.

Timbaland, did he produce for Aaliyah? I must say, some of
her songs had sweet ass music behind her singing... real
catchy and good stuff... better then most pop stuff you
hear...

offline Clic on 2002-03-17 06:44 [#00128870]

Wow. Can't say that I see that...

offline Clic on 2002-03-17 06:45 [#00128872]

And yes, he did produce for Aaliyah. Don't for sure if it
was on all of her tracks though.

i think he totally is right (in his opinion), and for gwely
mernans being gabba, with the kick laid percussion like it
is done, just very floating and with lots of effects, but
it's like a gabba song really...

I think the article sucked. Druqks was a great "sum-up" with
some good new "threads"

offline jand from Braintree (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-17 13:17 [#00128978]

Reynolds def knows his shit so you've got to respect his
point of view...have a read thru of some of his other
articles on there to get some idea how good he his...

His articles about Jungle, DnB for The Wire are some of my
fave writing of the 90s...Can't think of many of other music
journalists that I'm more in tune with that SR...I know I've
picked quite a few artists via him that I'd have otherwise
missed...

Anyone else read any of his books?...

P.S.... On this occassion SR is a bit off the mark...Drukqs
most certainly doesn't suck BTW...it's seldom far from my
ears and is probably my fave AFX album at the moment....

Who cares if he doesn't like it? It is of absolutely no
importance at all. I never really understood the need for a
music-ratingsystem. Just describing the music would be
better IMHO.

YEah so people do or dont like it. Stating its not good or
it is good. But these are just opinions. Its just music, the
degree of which it is good is up to the individual.

I personally, in my opinion find Drukqs boring and just
unoringinal. A Shame to his old work of which many diehard
old time fans feel the same.

I like drukqs, but by no means its his best. I still think
he has got a masterpiece somewhere on those DATs at home,
its just a case of him releasing them.

it's all opinion... all reviewers are giving their opinion
based on say a weeks listening... so, although I love
reading reviews, it really doesn't mean much I guess... I
like Drukqs, a lot...

I agree that it's more of an extension of his sound than a
full blown re-working. It's still an improvement, but not
very groundbreaking, of course. I fucking love Drukqs! It's
great.

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2002-03-17 17:46 [#00129076]

well, when I listen to The RDJ album, and then Drukqs,
obviously Drukqs is the most insane drill'n bass... and it
is a definate inprovement on the drill'n bass style... but,
I love The RDJ album for other reasons, and I like Drukqs
for different reasons... so, they're both great...

say...

I find the rest of his stuff sounds less impressive (but
still awesome, of course) after hearing the insanity on
Drukqs! That must mean he's doing SOMETHING right. It does
have too much weirdo filler, though. Nobody's perfect.

all people can be discribed with 3 parameters, that means
there are 4 classes of people (at least on this mb):
1. param: like / dont like drukqs
2. param: like / dont like confield
3. param: BoC-fan or not

thats everything important about a person. i wonder if there
are all possible types of persons here?

Much of Drukqs sukqs, but I'de say the the good outweighs
the bad.... lot's of filler and crap, but it's worth it for
tracks like Ziggomatic, Cock, 54 Cymru Beats, Metephace and
what not

DRUKQS cannot be said to be a pefect album... but it is the
best.

is like when you compare pete sampras (perfect) with agassi
(the best)

Drukqs is very good in a certain way, and some stuff is
really genius but it sometimes bores me out; maybe it sounds
just too frustrated and whacked.

I think Aphex set a new standard with the release of
Drukqs.

Every other release seems boring now when u compare them to
Drukqs.

I havent got impressed since Oct 22 :( (except Geogaddi n
Vatican Nitez).

I made my own drukqs tho with the ultimate track list ;)
(AFX said in a interview that the album is meant to fuck
around with, "do whatever tracklist u want wiht it"). I
still think the original tracklist works but I got a better
one, thats fo sure.

Ofcourse it got a few funny fillers but hey its all good I
still love it a LOT.

NAme one good release after oct 22 that makes u go
WOW!!!!!!!!!! (not BOC or Goon)!!!!!!!

Yeah thats right. Ofcourse "I liked" a lot of releases after
Drukqs but nothing that has been like
WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! ;=) That was exacty my reaction
when I heard Cock Ver10, Omgyija Switch 7, Ziggomatic, Vord
Hosbn, AFX 237, Avril 14 etc etc hehe

WHOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!........ dam I wanna get that feeling
again :) .....I need it NOW, gimme a new album that make me
go WOW!!.

druqks is rdj's most acomplished work up to date...

the drill tracks easily shadow squarepusher's untitled
single.

but the record itself it's a little distant i admit..
impersonal. it has more form and less feeling... it's stil
lbetter than any autechre. it's a sound that we've heard
before on other rephlex artists.. but never on aphex twin...
it's like bogdan reached perfection. that's drukqs.

I thought drukqs was one of RDJ's best, but more as a
refinement of his style than for breaking any new ground.

of course, I also like confield and love BoC, so maybe I'm
just an IDM-whore
