sorry that was useless.

i think its got the easiest learning curve out of any
software ive used. took me a week or so to get to a level
where i could do a lot of the stuff i can do in other
programs.

i guess the best way would be tutorials but i just mess
around.

The Tutortials within Live 5 and 6 are way excellent to get
you way started. Should you need more you can write me an
email. I can send a nice dvd-rom with a tutorial I just
received, covering everything from installation, audio
set-up and even advanced features. So Tolstoyed, let me know
=)

Teach yourself, within a month you'll know all the important
bits off by heart, within a few more, you'll be able to
master it.

ive been using it 2 yrs now, took me a month or so to pick
up the basics by using the tutorials.

do not doubt the power of impulse -- its probably the best
thing about ableton combined with the envelope editor..

the chick presenting that ableton tutorial vid irritates the
hell out of me.

"Ableton warp function - Warp 1 engage!" cringe worthy

it's a neat program, for any use. Composing, live looping,
or live djing. It took me an hour to get into the basics.

I don't really like DJing with Ableton, but it's certainly
possible. I mainly wind up using it to make soundboards of
samples for use when DJing (in the session view). If I've
broken a track up into its composite loops beforehand I'll
sometimes use it for live re-editing of a track. It's pretty
good for writing tracks too- the arrangement view is like a
souped-up version of the simple sequencing program Acid. If
you've used acid before, you'll pick it up very quickly
indeed. If you've not, or you just want to learn to do one
thing with it (eg just play live with it/just dj/just make
tracks) you'll pick it up fairly quickly. Even if you want
to master it completely, it shouldn't take very long, say
2-3 months.

One thing I really rate about it is that it has very good,
easy to follow tutorials that assume no prior knowledge.
They're nicely divided into different topics and if you work
through those you'll understand it in no time.

Despite my prefering decks to it, I don't want to give the
impression it's no good for DJing. Some 'proper' DJs use
Ableton exclusively. Casper was playing the other room at
the place I was DJing on Saturday and he didn't use anything
else.

well the thing is you can do more stuff when mixing with
ableton, i'd like to do a bit more than just mix two tracks
together..though it may take a while before i learn how to,
yeah :)

You could always run the channels into Live separately and
use it as an effects box type setup.

If I want to just play back midi files, to external midi
equipment, is Adleton Live the way to go? I don't want to
use my laptop to produce any audio at all, just use it as a
sequencer.
