max/msp

hi
i downloaded max msp and jitter and have been looking threw
the tutorials and failed to do live video with my dv, as i
just dont know how to use it.

i still dont know how to output whatever would be the final
...output...like i want to use it for vjing, using it as a
mixer of videos/clips, maybe visualization stuff and live dv
video, i wont buy this until i know how to use it, so might
anyone here experienced with max/msp could give me some
basics or merely help me build an environment so that i can
mix video with live video with vjing etc... as when i was
looking threw the jitter tutroials it was just one window
each time, and i want to know how to wire them if thats what
your meant to do.

i'd much appriciate anyones help, as i would rather use
max/msp then stuff like resolume or that bullshit interface
crap.

i dont know anything about it, but i assume anything is
possible, but would be able to have like a small window in
which you would open up a folder on your computer and all
the videos would be there, and be able to slide(reverse
foward) and have the different videos going and being able
to select them, and myabe when you do it would start the
video rather than just switching?
i would like to ask more, and learn more.

thank you

i cannot help you with msp at all but this might be
interesting for you.
vvvv

it's a modular environment very similar to max/msp but more
focused on visuals. it's free, it has lots off examples, a
very good explanation, much help files, turorials and
patches and the forum there works really great with good
people there.

you might wanna dig msp and try that out.

Give up, that's what I did with Max.

MaxMSP/Jitter can do whatever you need it to, but there will
be some serious learning involved no matter what. In my
opinion, the 30 days given to you by the trial version is
not enough to get a proper feel for the program.

Yeah, I tried figuring out what you can do. I got so far as
to accidentally making an abrassive sounding sine wave and
shutting it off. Now I feel much better that I didn't figure
out how to use it, because max msp is for wankers.

try using the jit.xfade object for starters. then search the
max forum. do the tutorials at least, they are very
helpful for beginners

good luck, feel free to email me if you want help with a
patch in progress

Kinda agreed.

IMO it's much better for someone like me to go into modular
synths with chance and logic things. There's some awesome
"generative" modular beats and stuff up on YouTube.

"jit.xfade object " i have absolutly no idea where to
start, ?

--------------------------

can someone help me build a video mixer where i will be able
to load any clips easily without it interupting what will be
being outputted?

so basically you know absolutely nothing about the program
and you want someone to build a vj application for you.

sorry. if you want to use max/msp you're going to have to
learn how to use it. it took me a couple months of
daily use to get comfortable, and a few more months to
actually do something interesting. i still use it every day
for years now and am happy to help you if you make an
effort.

i'm not going to send you a finished vj mixer (which by the
way, there are many apps that do what you are describing, no
work required). there are plenty of examples that come with
the tutorials; read them, play with the example patches and
do the tedious part. there are no shortcuts

sorry i must have written it badly, i'm not asking for
someone to build me a vj app and then thats it, i'am asking
sort of what would be the best approach, and help me with
some info i cant seem to find...like personal tech problems
like how would i actually output the output, and a problem
i'm having with using my dv camera threw firewire=in a
tutorial it doesnt register my camera, but in aanother
tutorial it registers my camera when in vtr mode/playback?

this is my cpu:

Intel(R)Core(TM)2 CPU

6300 @ 1.86GHz

1.93 GHz, 1.98GB of RAM

will this be suitable or maybe do i have to configure my
process in order for it too run smooth? cause theres def
something fishy

try lowering the resolution of your quicktimes (as a test,
say 320x240), and check the fps counters below the preview
windows

that patch is fairly complex for your needs. make sure the
banks don't have too many movies in them. start with just a
couple and work your way up. your cpu configuration seems ok
but i can't say for sure

what makes you say that this patch is complex for my needs?

Yes. Modulars are pretty great. I keep on ballancing on this
fine line between wanting one and not wanting to commit
myself to another lifelong obsession.

Hehe, the Buchla systems are kings of what I'm talking
about.

THIS is what I'm talking about:
Video 1
Video 2
Video 3

This guy's got an album coming out soon he says on video 3's
comments. I asked for a link, I need some more stuff like
this, it's great.

Because its a programming language written by musicians and
art students.

How powerfull is your computer? From what I understand, max
runs with a bit of overhead, but not much. How many
additional functions might your patch be running along with
the video?

If you are using a crack of max msp that (if I remember
correct its something like 4.152 or higher) it is designed
to screw up if its a crack.
