That was just a throw away thought due to some of the
replies on previous threads... ignore it.

808 state and such on early chillout zone mtv. then aphex's
'on'.. so that would be the beginning of the 90's. it was
called idm back then though. and it's not called idm now
either

I'll just sour the thread if I chime in so early, like the
proverbial bad apple at the bottom of the barrel, but the
first record I thought "Oh, this must be what those
Americans on the Internet are talking about when they say
'IDM'", which I just thought was them getting confused about
electronic music that wasn't overtly commercial Trance or
novelty rave, was Autechre's "Confield", which I'm still not
100% on.

i want to go there

DP: the talkbox is loads of fun, it's kind of hard to
pronounce certain sounds but you can go wowowawow
baby
for ages without getting slightly bored... my 101
works really well with it, it's just a matter of learning to
accentuate Cs and Ks etc to make it sound good. i haven't
really recorded anything with it before this track (which
hopefully will be done in a few days) but i just did
THIS as a demo for you

Possibly the first time I heard anything that might have one
day become The IDM, or at least the seed of it, would have
been in about 1988 when I was lying on my bed, listening to
the radio and heard Voodoo Ray played. Didn't know it then,
but that was the start of it.
I listened to the radio a fair bit though so I probably
heard loads before and just didn't get it.
It was Tri Repetae though when I decided there might be
something in this electronic music lark beyond just another
interesting load of musics.

For those put off by an answer, here is a cat that isn't.

about £120 shipped (to the UK) from thomann.de
do it!
one thing i will say is that the tube is a quite wide which
makes it difficult to 'talk', apparently a lot of people
swap theirs for a thinner one but i haven't bothered yet.

Nice! Garden centres and aquariums are good for tubing (dirt
cheap - £1 a metre, or thereabouts), make sure you get a
see through one so you can see if you're getting
condensation in there.

Just last week. 2007. I then proceeded to buy the back
catalogues of Autechre, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. Haven't
had time to listen to them all yet but I think I love it. I
also downloaded everything from Planet Mu and Rephlex
records. A mighty collection I now have.

<3 IDM!

White on white translucent black capes
Back on the rack
Bela Lugosi's dead
The bats have left the bell tower
The victims have been bled
Red velvet lines the black box
Bela Lugosi's dead
Undead undead undead
The virginal brides file past his tomb
Strewn with time's dead flowers
Bereft in deathly bloom
Alone in a darkened room
The count
Bela Logosi's dead
Undead undead undead

Hey. That's not even THAT expensive. I will seriously
consider this. Yeah, exchange the tube. I heard that a
thinner tube is better. Also, keep the tube in a curve, so
no saliva comes down the tube (Roger Troutman does this, i
noticed)

Isn't the classical talkbox synth a dx something?

my friend sent me come to daddy - mummy mix, multiple times
for the "bass" effect.

i then saw come to daddy on mtv2 around 99 or 2000 or
whenever it was.

then i realized it was one in the same. things exploded
from there and i haven't looked back. ok maybe a little
