Starting with the LPs:
Incunabula holds a special place for old school IDM heads and synth afficiandos alike
Tri Repeatae builds on these themes while introducing more challenging beat structures
Chiastic Slide could be argued where things begin to change. Solid release, but appears slim in comparison to what follows.
LP5 is considered the holy grail for many. Musically speaking, I come back to this album very often.
Ep7 is a continuation of its former, but slightly weaker in my opinion
Confield is another coveted release for many. Some suggest this is a venture in pretentious computer music wankery, while others defend its abstraction as the height of process-meets-art-meets-sound.
Draft 7.30 achieves to extend off of this, but with a bit more structure. It does sound more thick in places. However, it's the same thing here: Like Confield, one could say it is less musical, but more intellectual. whatever the fuck that means, but that kinda makes sense in an abstract sense.
Untilted Full circle. Hardware. I see this as a gesture to how big they think their dicks are, by way of attempting to recreate a modular software sound in hardware, while failing at an overall release that has innovative impact. Take it for what it's worth. There are some good songs here, but the live recordings from this tour are much better than the album.
-------------------------------------
In closing, you cant go wrong with LP5, Confield, or Draft 7.30, though opinions are like assholes and I like to perfectly fit buttholes around my wrist.

it's all top notcH! i'd say start with their debut, and go on with the yearz... Ae's work is all about their evolution through each record. They are not only masterz of composition, but they take the limits past the edgez. my personal favorites are Lp5, chiastic slide, Envane, This ep, and confield... but i love all the releasez really

can't go wrong with draft?
i think i listened to half of it once, and didn't even give it a second chance. not my kind of thing.
amber and incunabula and envane and cichlisuite are the best starting places, imo.
amber was the album that got me into electronica, for god's sake.

I'm into high levels of criticality, innovation, and the relationship between the artist's will, his concept, and his method of expression.

My approach to determining the "Best Autechre" would be to select the best tracks off of each LP and EP released since 1993, since I find it difficult to determine a "best" release.
For instance, my faves from Untilted are LCC, Pro Radii, and Fermium. From LP5 I'd say Acroyear2, Vose In, Corc, and Arch Carrier. I could go on with the other releases, but this should suffice in making my point.

Confield is their best album. It's so ALIVE.
I like everything they've released except for Anti-EP (well maybe not the whole thing, but Djarum is such a bad song that it ruins the entire EP) and Cavity Job (which barely counts as Autechre anyway).

lets boost the contravesrial level of this thread.
ok ill start, Autechre themselves said Amber was the weakest spot in their discography? I distinctly remember them saying it was too derivative and not what they would have naturally made if they weren't trying to imitate a certain style or something along those lines. am i pulling this out of my ass or is it real?

autechre is a weird thing for me...
i first got into autechre after seeing second bad vilbel on MTV2 years ago, but didn't buy anything by ae until a good couple of years later....i bought lp5 first, at the recommendation of the good people on here...i loved it, but then stopped listening for a while in favor of teh AFX.
then i started getting more...incunabula, tri repetae, confield, chiastic slide, draft 7.30 and finally untilted.
at first i found stuff like confield and draft 7.30 difficult to listen to, so stuck mainly to incunabula, tri repetae and lp5. then listened to BoC for ages and didn't give AFX or ae a decent listen.
but over the past year or so i've been listening to a LOT of autechre.
incunabula is probably my favorite, although it is difficult to choose.
