This was my post last year for the world's greatest music
blog Spoilt Victorian Child

Tuesday, December 06, 2005
Graffiti Dystopia!

I, like yourself, like music. Though I've never been able to
answer that dreaded question "What sort of music do you
like?". What sort? What "sort"? I like... all sorts. I,
again, in common with yourself, like a lot of everything, as
long it makes me smile, makes me dance (in a manner of
speaking), makes me think, makes me go "Bugger, that's rad",
makes me glad to have ears. And that "sort" of music one
finds in all genres, times and cultures. However, however...
if I HAD to pick a genre, if there was some horrific
situation that could only be averted by me saying what
"sort" of music I liked... Detroit techno. And then to cloud
the issue, I'd have to narrow it down to music influenced
by... Detroit Techno. It's a formula I never tire of,
machine rhythms, twinned with soft synths and strings.
Simple, clean, nostaligc and futuristic. I'm no purist, in
fact I'm some sort of heretical Detroit fan as my favorite
protagonists of this "sort" of music don't come from Detroit
at all, but from Essex, England. Don't get me wrong, I love
Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Jeff Mills,
Underground Resistance and all the originators. But right
now, I'm talking about B12. They, through their lp "Electro
Soma", back in, oooh 1993, introduced me to the world of
Detroit, and even though I have discovered all manner of
musical gems from and inspired by that city, it's always to
B12 I return.

(contd)

The third album in Warp's legendary "Artificial
Intelligence" series, Electro Soma takes the blueprint and
launches into space without losing sight of what makes
Detroit great. Economy, atmosphere, pristine rhythms and
bass with emotion pouring through the transistors and wires.
The wonder is how so few, seemingly sparse elements
constantly tell so many stories, fire off the imagination
with such understated efficiency. If any style of music were
to be described as having grace, it's here, on this record.
And on all their records, to be honest.

As they say on the radio interview from 1992 on Prelude pt.I
"We bought records from Detroit and this was the music that
we liked, we made music like this, and this music dried up
all of a sudden one and half years ago, ...so we tried to
continue it... " And why not, especially when they do it so
well.

Their last release was the "3 EP" on Warp in 1997,
fortunately the human body stores several years' worth of
B-12, so it has been possible to get by without new
material. However, there have recently been signs of their
reanimation. Over the last year the've begun to play live
again (they're playing at the Unofficial Warp Xmas Rave at
The Poke on the 16th December), and rumour has it that their
legendary back catalogue of strictly limited 12"s is due for
the box set treatment, and maybe even a new album.

B12, not just for anemic vegans.

"Back from the edge"? Predictably I love it. It starts of
with that more muscular sound that's been heard on their new
live sets, but when it gracefully pauses and then sweeps
into the classic B12 sound, with little echoes of my first
favourite track of theirs, the mighty "Hall of Mirrors"... I
could hug a tramp or rehabilitate a delinquant teenage
repeat offender, it makes life seem sunny. I hope they get
to release more new material soon.

Still no official word beyond "Coming Soon". Come on B12,
don't be shy, I'm sure inbetween creating some of the finest
music ever crafted, collecting toys, photography and
programming, you must browse XLT for interesting topics like
"How many years after drukqs was released did you adopt the
faux IDM scene as your own and fire up Fruityloops in order
to sound like Autechre on a 5p budget" and Woofty's polls
which are the only other place in the Universe to
acknowledge the existance of Mira Calix.

Why, because I've read a bit more about B12 than you have,
or just in general, because I am quite scary, even to
myself. You're just banally annoying like walking into
somebody else's rich, fruity fart carelessly left in a
supermarket aisle though.

I've just read what little stuff there is about them over
the years in magazines or on the Internet, and just
embellished my little post with the few extracurricular
activities they indulge in which is public knowledge. The
bit about toys comes from a quote by Steve from Warp who
said something like "they're these two guys from Essex who
spend all their royalties on collectable toys" or something
like that, and one of them writes blogs on both programming
and photography. Oh yeah, and they've released some records.
I hardly had to go through their rubbish bin to find that
out, nor would I want to.

How would you consider an author who'd written someone
else's biography? OMGZORZ, you totally like want TO BE THEM,
you are WEIRD. Did I mention I'm now living in Spain?

You've talked in an "I wish I could suck the filling out of"
way about Thom Yorke in the past.
You just seem to think it's cool at the moment to have a
downer on anyone who loves anything.

This isn't just aimed at you but it is getting pretty
fucking pathetic when whenever someone enthuses about music
on this so called fucking electronic music board they are
getting shitty comments targeted at them.

they are indeed back :-)

i've heard the masters of B12-16 and B12-17, plus the
remastered back catalogue (for the CD boxset) and the
remastered B12-15 that was never released (only a handful of
test pressings)

its very, very good - different yet the same. each 12" has
an almost housey-techno track, accompanied by two more
ambient, spacey, electronica-techno tunes...

they're playing live @ Plex in London next month:
(dunno if the details are up yet - also on the bill are
Ultradyne, MANASYt and me)

also there is a myspaz page... myspace/b12records

I only found their MySpace a few days ago. I got very sweaty
and nervous waiting to be accepted as a "friend" but they've
kindly let me in. They're sporting rad B12 t-shirts in the
slide show, I would pay ££££££'s for that bit of
merch'.

3 new 12"s upcoming.. (though I have got mp3s of B12-15 but
I think the proper release has new track on it as well).. a
box set... bung in a t-shirt and then I can finally say "I
need no more music, ever, that's me happy". Unless they're
planning an album.

I'm so pathetic, really.
