Live equipment suggestions

I might get the oppertunity to play live, but i need some
new gear, so i can make it possible.

I don't have much money, so i'm considering this setup:

*Cheapish laptop
*Mbox 2 mini
*Good mic
*Some kind of distortion effect for my voice (i sing over my
stuff)

I don't want a big ass laptop, as my cpu usage is insaly low
already. I don't use much power when i creaty my music, and
it's sort of Lo-fi. The good thing about the Mbox is that
it's USB driven, but i also think i remember someone here
slagging it off. I'd like to hear about the pro's and con's
about this setup.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Also, what i have in mind is basically energetic kareoke. If
anyone has a suggestion for some mixing software that could
make the playing of the backing tracks more interesting, i'm
all ears.

I don't know. I would suggest a sampler/sequencer like an
sp404 or MPC before a laptop for live music. There will be
practically no chance of it failing on you, and it only
takes seconds to boot up if it does end up getting shut off
accidentally.

MBox = Bad

For distortion you could probably just get one of those
cheap behringer distortion boxes. As a matter of fact, I
have two of them myself. They aren't great, and will break
if you step on them too hard, but they do the job they need
to.

I just bought a Line 6 Uber Metal distortion pedal, and it
sounds pretty awesome. Its digital and you can tell, but it
can destroy everything you run through it perfectly.

I never even considered that. Pretty brilliant actually.
Would i have the possibility to like, divide my tracks into
say, 4 different bits that play at the same time, and then
mess with them?

What's bad about Mbox? (i've heard others say it, so i'm
wondering)

Would a sampler/sequencer be cheaper than this setup?

I'm full of questions today.

(BTW, i was hoping that you in particular would answer to
this thread... you are a guru!)

I like the Boss Metal Zone distortion.. just because it has
sweepable mids. :)

Mbox 2 = good
Mbox 2 mini doesn't have midi ports, I'd save that little
extra so to avoid the mini.

Nord Micromodular is great for live work.

One says it's good, one says it's bad. Argh!

I've used protool for 10 years. Never had an Mbox but can
swear by it's software.

So what kind of sampler/sequencer, could do that? Basically
play some different files that i import from my computer
simultaniously, and let me mess with them?

you should just get a boss sp404 and a microphone and some
boss effects pedals for your microphone... then run all of
that to a mixer.... that's what i would do if vocal fuckery
is in the mind.

So help my noobishness here, a sp404 would be able to do
what i descbribe? Does it have enough memory?

hope the link helps... you can sample something into it...
and then resample and resample and resample.... you need
this

with that thing!

well music isn't about looks it's about sound... unless your
listening to what you see.

go buy a powerbook and get it on with your tunages then.

i don't know what to say in response when you say that
playin on it would look like you're playing with a
calculator.... aren't computers big fucking calculators?

Haha, it was only a joke. I would like to put the focus on
the singing. Basically, i could just sing over the tracks
from a discman. I just want something different, so i can be
a little creative if i do some instrumental tracks for
example.

So, basically (i seem thick, but i really need to be sure
about this before i buy) a Roland sp404 could do the trick.
I can import my tracks from my computer, and play like i
describe with nothing else than the Sp404, effects for the
voice, and a mixer?

you can't import the .wavs, but if you get a compact flash
card reader, then you can import the .wav files on to the cf
card. from there the sampler assigns each .wav file to a pad
on the sampler. you can then resample and do what you need
to do with each one.

Ah ok. But those aren't expensive at all, are they? This
might work actually... I'm seriously considering it.
