Right, my ipod shows the "dodgy filesystem" error message
when it boots up.

It's out of warranty.

I'm wondering, is there a way I can format it FAT32 (or
something similar), run a scandisk (so that the file system
is configured to ignore bad blocks) and install some
firmware that can run on such a file system?

Does Rockbox run on FAT?

i think there's some sort of trick you can do holding down
buttons or sommot.

yup, holding down all buttons apart from play/pause puts it
into a scandisk mode, but the actual firmware scandisk just
.. just does that.

just scans the disk, doesn't fix errors.

thanks, apple!

i thought formatting it manually was a big no?

my ipod keeps corrupting. done it about about 3/4 times. its
easy to fix but time consuming, and i need to have enough
hard drive space to back up my music, which i don't have
anymore. i'm seriously considering doing away with it, its a
pain in the arse.

Mines done this a couple of times and I just fiddle until
it's working. I think last time I took it apart and when I
put it together again it managed to connect to Windows
properly and I could format the fucker.

Haha! You're all such a load of nerds! I love it! :D
I'd probably just buy a new one, or give it to my brother to
fix. Geekz0rz :D

yep.
the problem is mainly the fact that the beginning of the FS
is so fucked that it takes a lonnnngggg time to show up in
windows, if at all, so that's not an option.

so i'm reformatting it (yes, a bad thing to do), and will
then install the rockbox firmware, hopefully that'll work,
and if not, then i've really lost nothing. worth a shot,
like

Throw it away and buy a Microsoft Zune.

Repair it, sell it for 50$ and buy an iAudio HDD player so
you can play flacs. The iAudio X5L player was the only good
electronic choice I've made recently.

plug it into your usb, anyways. eventough it won't "log in"
it should still get its energy from your pc.

I did a search, out of desperation, for "ipod clicking" and
came across some blog entry where a guy said something along
the lines of:

"no kidding, if your ipod starts to do this, pick it up
facing you, and slap it in a leftwise motion on the right
top hand corner. not too hard, but a slap."

worked perfectly.

my ipod works perfectly now.

absolutely unbelieveable.

second, more important point, is that RockBox is the most
amazing interface. absolutely brilliant... it even has a
mandelbrot generator..?! :D

It sounds like the hard-drive arm was stuck, and hitting it

in the place you did, jarred it loose. I'd keep an eye on
it if I were you...

Moreover, when did your iPod clicking issue begin? And what

model iPod do you have...

FYI to all, my iPod (5th gen 60gig video) although not
perfect, is great; I treat it like crap: I drop it, toss it,
misplace it, spill on it, yell at it, call it names, use it
as a storage dev, run it constantly
for weeks on end, then ignore it for a month later... and it

works great through out all. 10 hrs battery life easy, and
I've done all of the above without ever using some needless
protective case.

i've always been oppossed to apple, so I'm not biased, just
honest.

OMG
This actually worked for me just now! I thought my iPod was
toast, i was already pricing Zunes and what not. I had the
unhappy face icon and my iPod wouldn't start. I figured I'd
check and see if anybody here had a similar problem and did
a search and found this thread.

I turned my iPod upside down and banged the top of it
against my knee and holy shit. it works now. I feel like
Fonzie from Happy Days.
