terrific movie! pretty images and awesome characters
there.

my children will watch movies like this instead of movies
like harry potter. erm.. more or less.

Yes, have them watch a traumatic film influenced by war.
Choice.

it was good but like someone said on
watmm the best parts were trailered.
i did like it better than the lion the witch
and the wardrobe though; it was suit
ably dark in tone instead of cotton-
candyish. quite violent though indeed.

I agree that most of the better parts in the movie were in
the trailer, and I didn't think the movie was fantastical
enough. It had a few interesting scenes and the rest was
dominated by a war-time struggle plot, that although done
well enough, was not what I expected (in the bad way).

Did the extreme foley work bug the fuck out of anyone else?
They must have spend half the budget on it. Everything was
so loud and squishy or creeky or whatever sound effect they
could imagine turned to 11. It was actually distracting.

Maybe they just had the digital reverb turned up or even
just the sound was too loud at your theatre. It sounded fine
to me.

though.

just seemed like the amount of it was overdone. I don't even
hear sounds that exacting and punctuated in real life. That
could be the point, but that doesn't make it right.

offline Jarworski from The Grove (United Kingdom) on 2007-02-14 02:58 [#02049863]

Didn't like it much. The civil war storyline was engrossing
but mainly due to the constant threat of over the top
violence, and the fantasy sequences I found visually ok but
mawkish and insubstantial. For all the plaudits it's
received when the end credits rolled I was left with a
distinct feeling of "Is that it?"

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2007-02-14 03:13 [#02049868]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

I think the whole fantasy element was supposed to simbolize
her disconnection with the increasingly violent world she is
becoming involved in, and the unrealistic sound design and
over the top violence were only exclaimation points. Don't
mean to sound like a wanker.

I watched it last night. I knew nothing about it prior to
watching and I must say it was quite superb. Excessively
violent in places (the scene where the captain murdered that
man reminded me a little of Irreversible) but absolutely
stunning visually. The ambiguous ending is probably gonna
leave a lot of people feeling somewhat disappointed, but I
think it worked. Apparently, the director believes that her
fantasy experience was real, but I like the fact we can make
up our own minds.

Indeed, I enjoyed this very much. Definitely one of the more
interesting movies of late. Unfortunately, my only
reservation is the under use of fantasy elements. I wanted
more Pale Man! Appart from that, I thought it was excellent.

Yea I thought the movie was great. All I had seen by him
was the more commercial stuff (Hellboy, Blade II). I
thought it was interesting how you are never sure whether or
not what the girl was experiencing was real. Some people
complained that this was too slow, but I don't mind a
fantasy/horror that focuses more on drama rather than action
and thrills. Dark Water was another example of a movie like
this that I enjoyed but others were critical of.

film have been covered already.

<2cents> I felt it lacked actual drama/suspense

terrific film... afteward's my friends and I got into a
debate about whether or not the fantasy aspect was Dream or
Reality (within the context of the story). I'm in the
Reality camp, but would agree there is no clear answer.

very poor visuals, cheesy blue nights and oh-happy gold
daylights, pathetic scenes deep in the forest with sun
shining and rain falling only for the "blueish" effect.
stupid violent shit, probably the worst movie I have ever
seen. violence was so aesthetically overdosed that almost
made me puke.
I guess some pretty fucked up, perverse, sick fuck directed
this useless, nonsense crap.

i liked this movie. surprised to read it is possible to
dislike.
the creature sitting at the table was, say, cool (weird,
eerie, scary)
nice to see Marybel Verdu again (i liked her from the y tu
mama tambien film)

to stefano_azevedo: harry potter movies suck just a priori;
they are fucking crap, or something like that, "can't find
the word".

why did they call the english version "Pan's
Labyrinth"? the original title was "El laberinto del
fauno"... no mention of Pan...

anyway— i liked it. maybe not the absolute
masterpiece i had heard it was, but still very good... i
loved the ending. the faun & the "Pale man" (as well as the
red/creepy decor in which the "pale man" was, with
silenthill-like corridor) were really cool too; a shame the
golden palace was quite kitsch, especially compared to the
general classiness of the other "magic" characters & places.
and i liked Mercedes' character very much as well.

faun
c.1374, from L. Faunus, a god of the countryside, worshipped
especially by farmers and shepherds, equivalent of Gk.
Pan
. Formerly men with goat horns and tails, later with
goat legs, which caused them to be assimilated to satyrs.
The plural is fauni.

On the movie, I actually saw it just a few days ago. It was
ok, it had some nice visuals, and I liked the characters,
but the part where she isn't supposed to eat the grapes.. I
mean, that was too stereotypical and out of character.
