"We'd much prefer to have him pay restitution.."

Bullshit, this is a much better story for them.

You don't think they'd want a heartwarming story about a man
finding god and paying back the wrongs he had done before he
was saved?

...eh you're probably right.

Yeah. Well, I wouldn't call him poor so much, but he has
some psychological issues. It looks like he is about to or
has had a breakdown.

Is it just me or did they only show what he did as a result
of them trying to contact him. It seems that maybe he just
wasn't used to having to deal with the style american
newspeople seem to want to work in. They could have been
harrassing him for weeks prior and not shown that.

But to defend my own country, that is an extreme example.
However, he is nowhere near as scary as many of the
americans that I have met in person while I was living in
the beautiful state of florida.

What kinds of lovely people did you meet in Florida?

Well, there were all the crazy veitnam veterans, all the
crazy gun nuts who would talk about killing people if they
tried to take their guns away in casual conversation,
a whole heap of other kinds of people. They were just
generally all kind of scary. They all seemed so intense
about everything they did.

I remember once filling up the truck with my dad and this
group of black guys started angrily yelling at us from
across the parking lot, for no reason at all. Stupid racial
tension.

I was almost certain that this was some stupid skit spliced
in place of an actual report. It seemed staged, and the guy
seemed like he was projecting a performance for an audience
for comic effect. But when the cops and swat team came I was
truly shocked. That man is really nuts.

Seriously. They only showed the end. American news is like
the tabloids. They were probably provoking him for weeks and
he finally just snapped.

yeah but why would he call them back and then flip out
again? it's obviously not just that he's being pestered;
there's something wrong with the guy. i'd like to think i
could restrain myself from committing assault even if some
reporter was bugging me.

Not saying this happened, but if you had some people calling
you insessantly making demands and promising to put you on
the news and ruin your business you would probly be that
pissed too. This is americans that are doing it. They will
do anything to get drama for their newscast.

I would really like to see what was happening before. The
fact that they only show the end of the two weeks makes me
suspicious.

You certainly seem to feel strongly about this even though
you don't know all of the facts. That seems like a very
stereotypical "American" thing to do.

The link above is obviously a CNN report of another news
report that was conducted in Canada. The original report was
conducted by the Canadian television station Citytv. The old
guy in the video is Peter Silverman who is the host of a
feature called Silverman Helps which is a program
aimed at consumers.

It is true that the end part of the Citytv report is all
that is shown in the CNN report. There were at least 4 other
reports put together by the Silverman Helps program
before the outcome. I've been able to track down
two of them and neither are, in my opinion, exceptional
enough to make international news. The final one, with
numerous police officers, fire department officials and
emergency medical personnel going in after a lone
"optometrist" does seem a bit odd enough to be reported
across borders.

Considering that the original report was put together
entirely by the Canadian television station Citytv, without
any involvement from the United States of America, I am a
bit confused by your tin-foil hat allegations of "This is
americans that are doing it." This behaviour of stupidly and
vehemently pointing the finger without knowing all of the
facts is one of the things in the world that causes so many
problems. Is it really that difficult to be a decent human
and restrain from doing this?

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2007-02-20 13:39 [#02052649]

Admittedly, I based it off of assumption, but I stated that
right from the beginning, so its nothing to get confused
over. I also stated that americans are scary people that
overdramatise their news to get ratings, and they do. If you
want to accuse me of overgeneralization you are free to do
so. I am tired of the way the US is pushing its weight
around internationally for its own stupid ends, so I will
use my freedom to express myself as such.

But I did not read anywhere that it was made by city tv, so
point taken. All I saw is that it was CNN, and that is about
as reputable as the national inquirer as far as I am
concerned.
