Hi Folks,

Anyone got a good intro/guide to the organisation(s)
responsible for collecting royalties from airplay on
radio/tv/etc. for musicians in the UK?

Also, do the releases have to be proper (as in, you can buy
the CD of them) ones for you to get royalties, or can you
get it on demos/radiostation exclusives/dubs?

TIA.

yo. to receive airplay royalties you need to sign up with
the MCPS who are teamed with the PRS. you pay a
one off fee but they monitor all airplay and performance
royaltys. theyre the standard for the whole of the UK and if
you dont sign up with them you will never see any airplay
royaltys which is a bastard. also i dont think you get
anything backdated, so if youve been played already youre
never going to see that money. its gone into their pockets.

in regards to the demos etc. as far as i understand it
(though i may be wrong) if you register your artist name and
track, whatever it is, and it gets played youll get the
money. Tracks can be played weeks and weeks in advance of
them being pressed and its the radio station that owes you
money for playing your copyrighted material, even if its a
CD-R that theres only one copy of.

all this depends on the radio station or TV channel youre
played on though. im not sure about their atittude to
netstations and suchlike.

hope this helps a bit.

Is MCPS similar to ASCAP or BMI?

well at a quick 5 second glance ASCAP and BMI seem to be the
american counterparts.
