I like it very much!! U have good editing skills. The
atmosphere of the vid was unreal and bizarre. Very
impressive.

that was pretty good, kind of reminds me of the videos i was
making in high school. some of the same flaws mine had tho
too.

imo if youre going to make it a 5 min + video you really
need to have some kind of narrative structure. synched up
footage is good for shorter, 1-3 min videos, but past that
you need something else to really keep the watcher watching
and move the story forwards.

other than that, it was quite well done. some of the little
glitch outs could have been a bit more in synch with the
music, but thats more regarding the software than your
skills as an editor.

now that i have a macbook, kind of makes me want to dig out
my dv cam and see if i can still whip things up in imovie
like i used to.

thanks for the feedback! it's supposed to be under 5
minutes, though. i kind of agree about finding another way
to keep the audience captivated, but i think i still did an
alright job putting new stuff on the screen.

i'm very impressed! i really like the ideas, but the editing
lacks from time to time. most of the video it looks like i'm
watching some soundless video, while listening to girl/boy
song. the ideas are great though! and that's arguably the
hardest part.
develop some editing skills (yeah, i know it was a hard
track!), and your camera work could be a bit more improved
as well. for instance, the shots where the children are
building a sandcastle, the camerawork is too static, i
think. more shots of their hands from their own point of
view would have added a bit more action. ...but i'm
nitpicking.

i don't know is anyone will ever see this, but oh well.

mappatazee: i've never seen the 'On' video.

zero-cool: Thank you!

goDel: thanks for the feedback. i made this video a few
years ago in iMovie so yeah, the editing was lacking. but i
definately agree with what you have to say and, looking at
it now, about 2 years later, i wish i'd done a little more
to it.

"on"

honestly, my opinion based on the first minute of the video
is that is is pretty horrible... sorry for being disgusting,
i dont like being like this, and it could have been a nice
video, because the kids and the track, but the stupid speech
at the beggining of it ruined it all.

I did think it was the "On" video combined with BOC-like
imagery. Some of it was really nice, thre's a bit with the
kids in what looks like the front yard (as you Americans
say) and I liked them on the rocking horse things, but it
was too much of the same thing "sped up kids doing what kids
do".

The speech at the begining saying "I'm here to show you
things you've never seen before" was a pretty grandiose
claim.

I say all this I couldn't have made that video. 6/10.

OKAY, real quick people, i'm REQUIRED to make an intro video
for this contest. the intro video was not there for the
actual movie. this is for the TV show "The Lot", and the
rules say you need to include a 30-45 second intro to
yourself and your movie. just an FYI.

and frankly, i disagree with any claim that my video is any
kind of "take" on the video for "On". if anything, David
Firth's music video for Girl/Boy Song is a take on the "On"
video, not mine.

this is his:

I'm always quite disturbed when I see xltroniconians in
'human' form.

3/10

mm, this song never had that big of an impact on me, but if
I made the video, I'd make all the boy parts doing fucked up
stuff like killing/destroying/unleashing an army of slugs in
sync with the percussion only. And the girl parts would be
healing things the boy destroyed/loving/creating beautiful
things in sync to the melody only.

The best part was when the boy grabbed the penis of the
penis sand castle. Other than that it is mostly normal film
of normal stuff sped up. And one time the girl fell down
right on one fitting persussion hit or something, but music
videos in general should be very in sync with the music, the
shining example of which is the autechre dvd.

i agree. that is an excellent idea.

keep in mind real quick i made this when i was a junior in
high school. i wanted to make an experimental video and i
loved the song. things feel into place at least alright in
my opinion.

i like the feedback, positive and negative. the opinions
expressed here mean a lot to me because i know you guys
really, really appreciate and like Aphex Twin's music
probably a lot more than i do (which is to say that he's an
artist on my big database of artists, but not necessarily my
top one. you get what i mean.) so i know if you say it needs
work, you mean it, and you think his work should be shown in
the best light possible. so thanks for everything you've got
to say.

To all music-video-makers out there: please please please
stop doing this perfectly and painstakingly synchronised to
the beat editing. It's been done to death, and it's so
fucking futile and boring. Try to find new ways to go with
the song, try to think of something, I beg you.

i haven't seen very many of these kinds of videos. granted
that i most certainly HAVE, but i think it's very fitting.

maybe you're right. maybe we do need to break away from this
trend. as for me, when i made this video when i was 16, i
hadn't seen any of Aphex Twin's other music videos, or very
many videos that synced the video up with the song in the
way that mine does.

i guess you could say it was a "good idea at the time".

i appologize that everyone seems to dispise the introduction
so much, but i hope you're all keeping in mind that it's
required of me to put one in there for this contest and it
should not effect your movie watching experience outside
just a glimpse at the film maker. i must sound like a broken
record but thank you for all feedback, positive and
negative.

I'm sorry for being so harsh, you're nice. At least I give

do, which would have been cheap and vile, and just showing
normal Things Children Do as is.

I know that others have already commented on the intro, and
I don't mean to beat a dead horse. Rather, I just mean to
explain WHY I think it needs to be changed.

You sound really pretentious and stuck up. "I have some
really unique ideas" -- that makes me form a bias against
the movie before I've even seen it. Be more humble, try not
to be so ambitious.

As for the movie itself, I like the concept, it definitely
fit the song. But it got old pretty quick. And some of the
effects were really gimmicky, like the one transition that
was like a big ripple, like a rock being thrown into the
watery television screen.

I was impressed with certain parts of it though. Especially
good was the shot of the kids in the yard near the street.
You can see this big, fat tree in the background, and it
just looks really sexy and lush moving really fast.

Maybe you could try putting in shots of other things doing
similar things to what the kids are doing, in order to break
up the monotony a little? For instance, the two kids are
wrestling in one shot. Then it shows two crazy looking ants
wrestling either in the next shot or soon thereafter. Just
you know, change it up a little.

Well, nice work, but man -- get rid of that intro. All it
does is make me think you're a super pretentious liberal art
guy who thinks that he daily thinks of things no one else
ever has. I know that's just a stereotype in my mind, and
you seem like a very nice, humble individual on the thread,
so my perception's obviously wrong -- but most viewers won't
have the advantage of talking to you personally.

thanks for the feedback, sirmailbox. i really appreciate it.
i'd like to point out real quickly that i say "I think i
have a lot of really unique ideas". this is completely open
to everyone's opinion because i merely said that i THINK i
have these ideas, not that i truely and honestly do. there
are people on American Idol who say they think they have
great voices but they get thrown out faster than simon could
finish his insult.

i very well may be nothing special. but i'd at least like to
err on the side of confidence than to say "i hope i'm good
enough". i don't think people make it big by saying "well, i
had a feeling i was going to make it big. guess i just got
lucky!" they make it with confidence and i think that's what
they might be looking for on this show. if i'm wrong, then
i'm wrong, and i won't make it, and i'll live.

here's another thing: i didn't find out about this contest
in time for me to make an entirely new movie specifically
for it. making a good movie takes time: this movie took me a
long time my junior year. i don't think i could've put
something together by the 16th that would've matched the
quality of this movie, which i think isn't so bad, honestly.
i do agree and acknowledge that the shots might (and
probably do) get monotonous, but the DVD is burned and ready
to ship to the show as soon as i can get the liscencing
agreements for the song. so there's not much i can do about
it.

this video i hope gives a taste to people that i do think
differently, at least differently than the average
run-of-the-mill Hollywood filmaker. it's impossible for me
to make a movie that ecompasses me completely as a
filmmaker: i can only provide a taste for you. you have to
trust that i can continue to put out new and unique stuff
multiple times in the future. if you don't, if they don't,
then i won't make it.

but i understand everything you have to say. thanks.

The techniques you use are now being used, if not
(frequently) in Hollywood films, at least in mainstream
videos and, worst of all, commercials, and have been for a
long time. There's nothing radical about it anymore.
Radicality is constantly recuperated, you need to always
move on if you want to escape it.

darius: i agree that the techniques i'm using are starting
to appear in hollywood films, but not in an enormous
frequency. i haven't seen them that often and they appear to
me to be few and far between. to come up with something
COMPLETELY ORIGINAL is hard to do with the little resources
that i have. they know that. they know that the movies that
they're going to be receiving aren't going to be up to their
standards of editing, acting, etch. what they're going to be
doing (what they KNOW they'll be doing) is trying to see
through to the main idea of the movies, to the concepts and
writing, and find jewels behind the amatuer qualities they
know they'll find in all these videos that they'll be
receiving.
