compressed (all tracks)

compressed kick on sidechain

tell me what the fuck to do????

with compressor on the main track it achieves the punchy
effect i'm going for. however, the track is made thin like a
cardboard tube.. and trying to pull the details with EQ
ontop of the compressor makes it sound worse

then, with compressor on only the kick track with the
sidechain EQ , the kick is indeed louder but it's not... i
dont know.. it doesn't punch. its just literally "ontop" and
it sounds bad. where do i find the middle ground?

Don't use a compressor.

Your finding some problems with what you mix sounds like, so
you add compression to it, finding that you are less
satisfyed, so you are adding more compression to it, so on
and so forth?

The answer? Stop using compression.

Try some shelving EQ to keep the kick and the other elements
from stepping on each other's toes. Also try a shorter decay
on the kick and a tiny bit of drum room reverb on it to make
it stand out more. I guess it depends on what you want. I
like a kick that's like a short little *THUCK* kicking you
in the lower back.

im just getting rid of it ... i think its just that im doing
all of this shit on one software interface and its fucking
me up. i get into these corners and its like, 'wow, there is
so much shit going on, and it sounds like fucking shit',
then i boot up the hardware and i have like the opposite
experience, i think i need to take a class on using music
software or something before i make anymore

you know I've told you this a milion times by now.
stop thinking that a compressor will magically make your
badly mixed track good.

remove all the compression. start by mixing all the volumes
and eq-ing. cut the low frequencies of everything that
doesn't need it. so your kick can have all the room it
needs. NO COMPRESSION anywhere whatsover. only eq.

and instead of boosting feq all the time. think about what
freq you can cut so that other freq may get more room.

Totally agree, stay off compression untill you got the
filtering right.

A good way to get a really good start with your mix is to
keep things as "mono" as possible, if you get your
frequencies right in mono it's gonna turn out sounding allot
better after panning it out + in mono it's easyer to hear
troublesome frequencies and peaks will be more noticeable.
