Can you believe that this incredible film was not nominated
for a single Academy Award? Shocking.

... And Oliver! was deemed not only a better film than 2001:
A Space Odyssey, but also to have had better direction!
Unbelievable!

Oh. I thought his would be paying tribute to the awesome J
Dilla's last release.

A question: does every copy have loads of intrusive samples
from said film or did I download a pirate-unfriendly copy?

Quite right too.

The Shining is a god film but horror films never do good at
the Oscars, they prefer films about faggot cowboys etc.

2001 is grossly overrated tedious boring clap trap.

I wouldn't simply lump The Shining in the 'horror' category
- it's a film of almost continuous sublimity. I thought I
had grown weary of it, having seen it so many times but,
looking through my DVD collexion last night for something to
watch for bedtime I finally thought, "OK, I might as well
put on The Shining," and I was captivated - I saw it in a
light I'd never seen before - the clarity of the shots, the
power of the cuts & the music; all these seemed magnified --
and I was only watching it on my laptop with table-speakers!
And I finally saw the utter wretchedness of Jack Torrance,
the unspeakable weakness of character. Maybe it was
something I ate.

It's one of King's more effective novels, although it does
contain the usual King Kopyrights: ineffectual ending,
self-defeating waffling in some kind of attempt to build
tension. I don't see any strong connexion between book and
film (probably why King was miffed with it and preferred the
abysmal mini-series).

The film is, naturally, more visual and has the added
advantage of being able to use sound effectively in the
building of tension and effect.

Indeed, it is not good and it is tedium-film.

But remember to back when it was released - people generally
had attention spans longer than it takes to load up the next
level of a computer game, or the five minutes of a
television programme before the next batch of advertisements
kick in.

jack nicholson's facial expressions and acting in this scene
are absolutely astounding:

Jack Torrance: Wendy, let me explain something to you.
Whenever you come in here and interrupt me, you're breaking
my concentration. You're distracting me. And it will then
take me time to get back to where I was. You understand?
Wendy Torrance: Yeah.
Jack Torrance: Now, we're going to make a new rule. When you
come in here and you hear me typing
[types]
Jack Torrance: or whether you DON'T hear me typing, or
whatever the FUCK you hear me doing; when I'm in here, it
means that I am working, THAT means don't come in. Now, do
you think you can handle that?
Wendy Torrance: Yeah.
Jack Torrance: Good. Now why don't you start right now and
get the fuck out of here? Hm?

yes, my favorite slow-film is Andy Tarkovsky's Stalkery.
Stalker is a good film. I also like Spirited-Away as from
today more then ever, but it is not slow-film, it is anime.

Spirited Away is a quite beautiful piece of animation.

For me, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a ballet - a beautiful,
graceful, sterile ballet.

more) trying to criticise a film-making god such as Kubrick
was -- two words, Stephen King:

Maximum Overdrive

I hate to sound like a snob, but The Shawshank Redemption is
one of the most overrated films ever. It often tops the
public's All Time Best lists and, to my despair, lends
support to the argument that most people are stupid. Leave
lists to the up-their-own-arse critics I say.

Let's both be snobs. Shawshank was nothing but a nice little
feelgood flick. It doesn't even deserve half the status of
Kubrick's Shining.

offline dave_g from United Kingdom on 2007-01-27 14:15 [#02039177]

The shawshank redemption is a very good film, I don't really
understand how it can be overrated.

As for 2001, it came out in 1968, before the moon landings
and has some radical features. It is also a bit boring in
places, but the film is fantastic. The graceful movements of
the spaceships docking with the station as the blue danube
plays is lovely.
The SILENCE of space is brilliant and adds to the tension.
The bit where he runs laps round the inside of the walls
seriously made my jaw drop when I saw it. No CGI, they built
a huge hamster wheel, but it is totally immersive when you
watch it.
For the time when it came out it must have been so different
and fresh.

The shining is alright. I don't really go in for horror
films, but it's fun to watch with people who are easily
scared 'cos you can wiggle your little finger and talk in a
funny voice and they hate it oh and Nicholson is great fun
in that film.

Relative to other steven king movies I've seen those are
better imo. I mostly remember this one where like people
with zombie make up gather around and have a boring meeting
in the woods or something; probably this 'shining' you guys
are raving about.

Bah, I don't think The Shawshank Redemption is overrated at
all. To say it's just a feel good movie is kind of missing
the point in my opinion. For the majority of the movie the
main characters are stuck in dark and depressing prison, and
yes the ending is very nice and uplifting, but there's more
to it then that. To me it's a cleverly written story, and
the movie has a great script, great actors doing excellent
performances, and great cinematography (sp?), music, etc.
I'm probably a bit biased though, because I'd probably put
it in my top 5 movies of all time list! :P
