Loved this film, another great by Kubrick. As much as I am a
Stephen King fan, (and most hardcore King fans bitch about
this move) I find the movie to be one of my all-time
favorite horror films.

Plus it's such a well-paced film. Unlike most horror, it
keeps you in anticipation for a good while, and paces itself
rather than just cutting to the featured death scenes five
minutes into a film. It's that suspense, that knowing that
something bad is coming, that really sets the film out from
others in its genre. Most film directors have forgot the
meaning of real suspense.

Alfred Hitchcock once said something along the lines of "if
you were watching two people talking, and all of a sudden a
bomb goes off, you receive maybe five seconds of shock from
the audience. however, if, while they are talking, you show
them the bomb, then the audience is greatly anticipating it.
they're saying 'don't talk! there's a bomb under there!'"

it's such a simple concept, and lost on most film-makers
these days.

all i can say is 'get it!'. great stuff. and while you're at
it get 'liseys story' as well, that one's a lot less gory
and over-the-top compared to cell. i however prefer that one
over 'cell'.

Im absolutely in love with 2001: a space odysseus. I think
its a brilliant film - im not even close to get bored.

"2001 is grossly overrated tedious boring clap trap."
I cant believe the amount of films you must dislike, its
really scary actually. Maybe you just don't like films, in
general.

you haven't already.

and if you don't like it - screw you!

I have an old VHS of it - it was evidently one sent out to
videostores because it has a timer on it and every so often
"Property Of..." It's my all-time favourite 'bad' film. My
friend & I rented it when it first came out on video, and we
were both totally mashed on the resin and the film just had
an amazing atmosphere. Plus, even though watched on a
moderately sized TV, it felt like it was on an immense
cinema screen which I was sitting right in front of, but
that's being very stoned for ya.

the shining is a very good movie, but far from the best of
anything. as far as stephen king goes, he's pretty horrible
at writing, but some of his stories make for entertaining
movies. most of them make for garbage though, especially the
mini series.

That was a great read. I look forward to seeing the film
again. I feel sort of foolish to have missed this much
meaning after having seen his film at least 3 times. The
replay value certainly is shocking.

The Shining FAQ

In regards to the article I linked to - I've downloaded the
US version of the film, 20+ minutes longer, and a lot of the
things mentioned in that article are only in the longer
version.

Jack Nicholson's performance is unparalleled in this movie.
Shelly Duvall did a great job as well. No watered-down
Hollywood cliche of the new millenium could hold a candle to
The Shining.

... And yet, there's rumoured to be a seQuel / remake in the
works... when inspiration fails; copy.
