is anti virus software even necessary?

if i am running firefox and don't ever use microsoft
outlook, do i even really need norton antivirus running on
my machine? i'm so sick of waiting for it to load and i
know it hogs up all my damn memory. it's never detected any
nefarious activity that i know of. or found a single virus
after a scan.

i've never had a virus on this machine. even when i kept
norton turned off for several weeks.

I think viruses are on the way out, really. Trojans and
ad/spy/mal/ware are what you have to watch out for.
Super Antispyware is a good free solution for that. It finds
things nothing else does. Great tool. I stumbled across it
on a forum dedicated to removing spyware.

Norton is a total piece of shit. I prefer Nod32 or
Kaspersky. I may switch to Kaspersky when my Nod32 license
runs out because it seems to be better at detecting spyware
and trojans than Nod32.

maybe you should consider the possibility that the reason
you've never found a virus is that you've had anti-virus
running?

as far as I can tell from a bit of testing, there aren't any
single programs that get all.. they could somehow be
cheating to make themselves necessary, but if you run one
program, and it finds something and removes it, another
program is almost sure to turn up something that first
program didn't find. The only way to be sure seems to be to
have all available spyware-removal programs available and
run them one after the other.

however, that's for if you're neurotic about it.

Normally I would agree with you. This one is almost
supernaturally good, though. That is why it gets the
coveted...

i don't run virus software.... but I don't check email in
MS-Outlook, nor use IE.

and I agree.. the malware/Trojan issue is a bigger issue.
But then again, I try not to install alot of software...
stay away from wares... and clean the registry often.

if it doesn't look like something I know... I google it and
delete it if it seems odd.

I work in this sector, I wont bore you to tears but if you
use the internet then you should have virus protection.

Yeah I guess having one is a must. but having one run in he
background with those "shields" is completely unnecessary
IMO. Just be careful about what you download off the net.
and if you're suspicious run a scan on the file. and a full
scan every once in a while, like twice a year or something.

... #1 virus source? p0rn.

read a book, take a cold shower, call up a girl... wear a
condom and your computer will never be infected.

Then bang! you've got aids.

this computer has been on and connected to the internet for
more than 3 years (the time it's been off is miniscule, just
restarts and a few days when i went travelling with it.)

no firewall, no virus protection.

oftentimes i will do a spyware scan and have nothing after
months.

i'm connected behind a router and use firefox

I think that's hard to believe. virus programmers would take
the challenge anyway.

I think someone needs to design some Apple viruses & trojans
if only to shut the Apple geeks up.
