which adobe product is best for creating new graphics? Photoshop seems to be a total pain in the ass to create things in from scratch. Is fireworks the only other offering they have?

If you can't handle photoshop, the other products aren't gonna be any easier, especially illustrator.
Fireworks is mainly used for web graphics.

i can handle photoshop, it just doesn't seem to be very good at making things from nothing.
It's good at editing photos, as you would expect...

if you're familiar with any kind of analog rendering (oils, watercolor, pencil/charcoal etc) try corel painter, loads of presets for traditional artists
