You know what I hate is how people refer to the more expensive and capable audio / midi sequencers as DAWs. It sounds like a word a dumb cartoon dog says.

And yet is one half of the awesome word, Jackdaw.

The Jack does disarm the DAW of its nastiness. Well played.
I'm surprised there's no open source project called JackDaw since there's a Linux audio system called Jack.

I don't like it either. Mind you, I don't like the term "workstation", so I suppose it's hardly suprising.

"workstation" all on its own is maybe even worse. Like calling a bar stool a drinkstation. I feel like I should be wearing silver coveralls and antennae.

How am I supposed to pick up the American stations then?
DM: it means Digital Audio Workstation, which actually means "jerkoff pornbox sometimes used to produce buzzing noise".

hahaha
I'd actually be more excited about getting a jerkoff pornbox sometimes used to produce buzzing noise (JPSUTPBN) than a digital audio workstation.

Anything that you use as your main sequencer is a DAW. Not just things like protools. Fruityloops is a DAW.
I find the term quite usefull. You could go around debating how much you hate the term LCD screens for LCD screens, or the word cake for cake. It will do you as much good. What would you call it?
"I would call it 'The thing I sequence music with'."
What a retarded debate.

"The thing I sequence music with" = "a sequencer"

Fruityloops is a DAW.
Could you record yourself saying that for me? Doing an impersonation of Marlon Brando in Streetcar? Thanks.

what about calling it by its name? if the person you're talking to is a musician, its name is more likely to be effective at making this person actually understand which object you're talking about, and if your listener isn't a musician, DAW is as confusing as the object's "real" name, so calling it a sequencer or the thing I make music with is more likely to make sense.
it's like an army man telling you to get into the ATV when he could just as easily say "the car."

Well, its similar to talking about synthesizers or samplers. Its a name for something that has a specific use. Forgive me if I sound a bit pissed off, but sometimes this place sounds like stoned 17 year olds discussing grunge music.

Whereas if you said to an army man simply "Get in the car" he would interpret this as "Lay down suppresive fire, keep civilian casualties to a maximum and dive head first through the windshield"
