Do races exist?

Do races exist? Or do they just exists as long as someone
believes in them? My dog 'Killer' is empirical, the race
'Rottweiler' is transcendental. So, our mind ads something
to the empirical material. I can say 'I see 5 trees' but the
number 5 which is a category, does not exist in reality. So,
Races and classes do not exist. And all the theories they
are sourrounded by are only subjective....Huh?

A google image search says yes!

"putt-putt enters the race"

"I can say 'I see 5 trees' but the
number 5 which is a category, does not exist in reality."

Five is a descriptive term for the number of similar objects
you see.

Seems like a biological question in the first place, and a
sociological in the second. Philosophical theories are
hugely overrated. And that's as far as I will go. The rest
of the answer you should be able to make up for yourself by
now.

What is the diffrence? Genetically
? Biologically? Arent genetics responsible for our biology?

Following your reasoning we could argue we're the same race
as rabbits. Come to think of it, yeah you're right. We're
all the same race.

so biology and sociology aren't subject to human categories?
race itself is a category. However, the answer to monoids
question will depend on what it means by exist, and I won't
bother asking it.

some intelligent looking person argued we would be able to
grow a tail, if we could turn on the right genes.

anyway monoid, what a load of cock cheese. they exist when
you're doing a science that needs them, and they dont if you
define them in certain ways. as for the ontology, you could
argue nothing exists. i'm assuming you're just trying to be
shocking and all, with the racial issue?

my 2 cents: there are no races, exept germans and
non-germans.

My objection to philosophical theories about categories, as
used in this context, is that it leads to a whole lot of
arguments which are a waste of energy. Which is confirmed by
your 'not bothering'. I'm happy we agree.

No. They do not. For example, there are no races or social
classes in some sociological theories like the Systems
Theory. So, fuck off if you are tring to be smarter than me.

I'm more discouraged by the monoid itself than I am by any
argument about categories. however, the answer to its
question lies neither in the discussion of categories nor in
biology or anything else, but rather what it means by the
ambiguous word "exist."

'Nowhere and nowhen' We shall find it convenient only to
speak of things existing when they are in time, that is to
say, when we can point to some time at which they exist (not
excluding the possibility of their existing at all times).
Thus thoughts and feelings, minds and physical objects
exist. But Races do not exist in this sense; we shall say
that they subsist or have being, where 'being' is opposed to
'existence' as being timeless. The world of Races,
therefore, may also be described as the world of being.

most, or all, words are almost infinitely ambiguous. Exist
can mean that something is, supposedly objectively, in the
world. It can also refer to your existence, as understood in
existentialism, "your world" if you want to have the
oversimplified new-age version. In the extension of the last
one, it can also refer to life, in a way, "we have the bare
necessities of existence."

However, the way I mean it to be ambiguous in this context
is that monoid could be defining existence as (1) the
existence of something, objectively, in the world or (2) the
existence of something, if you will, subjectively, in the
world. If the categories are man-made, then, without man,
they don't exist, and thus, the "thing," as categorised by
man, doesn't exist. It may still have an objective place in
the world, but we don't know what that is, nor if it
really is (what if a banana, in reality, has 1405 separate
parts instead of being just one banana, or at most, the
banana and its.. eh.. shell?).

If something exists, it exists. Its existence doesn't rely
on subjective awareness of the existence of the thing.

If it exists, it exists.

You don't have to hear the clap of two hands for it to make
a noise.

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2007-01-20 10:09 [#02035057]

you're not really saying what existence is, you're just
saying if a then a.

also, even "noise" is a too abstract concept for it to
actually apply to a clapping sound; it's a clapping sound
when you hear it, but when you don't hear it, it's noise?
how do you make that connection? if you were to describe it
in what we suppose is our most accurate and objective way of
describing it, you'd have to have some kind of physics guy
write you a formula for the transfer of energy through sound
waves or something, but even that is too far removed, too
abstract, to apply to what one would mean by a "hard-core"
definition of "reality" (this definition itself is also
pretty abstract and not applicable to itself).
