I just found out the following:
"A common misconception is that certain types of electronic publication, such as email or postings to bulletin boards and newsgroups are automatically public domain - this is not true, the author retains copyright on their work. Public domain works tend to be the exception rather than the rule, if you are unsure you should assume that a work is copyrighted."
This means that if you copy and paste something from another person's post to indicate what you're replying to without referencing it you're breaking copyright. I always thought it was like just repeating what someone had said in a conversation!
