I've never seen semantics used that way. Usually when someone says "it's merely semantics" or something like it, they mean that someone is turning an argument from what it really is about over to the specific words one of the participants is using and their "true" meanings. Like here, for instance, if this argument over the word semantics continues, one of you could effectively stop it and prompt a return to the "original" argument by saying "enough with the semantics already, let's get back to what we were talking about!" In this case you'd get a special bonus, in that the word semantics would refer both to the state of the argument and the word whose semantics you're disagreeing about. |
