How much does your environment...

...affect your taste in music?

Looking at the dates I bought/made various tracks, I've seen
a definate correlation between where I was at a time and the
music I bought/made. Whenever I've lived (or even just
worked) in the countryside, I've been a lot more into
ambient and downtempo, where when I live in cities/town
centres, I'm more into Drum and Bass, Dance, etc. When I
lived in the superb, my tastes were probably the most
diverse they've been.

So, is the term "Urban music" truly justified, or do you
live in the middle of the Norfolk broads and enjoy gangst
rap? Perhaps you live in SE25 and listen to nothing but
ambient?

it's probably got a lot to say. you're probably reminded of
something you listened to in a similar environment or maybe
you just associate one kind of music with a particular
environment.. it's probably the same with time, like,
christmas gets you in a singing mood or something.

icy water makes me want to put on Aim - Cold Water Music.
It's a fairly straightforward connection. A less obvious one
is how being at my grandmothers place makes me want to make
chiptunes and being at my parents' place makes me want to
make songs made entirely out of one sound or just whatever I
can reach without getting up or some other very limiting
project frame.

I think it's inevitable that we buy/select/make music
depending on our mood or frame of mind and our environment
plays a large part in that. I rarely play
reggae/afrobeat/latin/Brazilian music in the winter.

I'm sure it made a difference to me prior to the advent of
the net, which then bombarded me with a million and one
cultures/styles of music.

Its weird really because I buy most of my music online and
even listen to most of my music direct from my computer. I
listen to pretty much every single genre out there so I
don't think environment has anything to do with it
personally (unless you include the internet as an
environment, in which case it has definitely made my taste
more eclectic).

I guess if I lived in a rural area, i'd be tempted to go all
hippy boc fire, but i'd still need to blast the hardcore
techno every once in a while too :)

I don't think environment affect what I listen to. It's more
the general mood that day. I'm not the kind of guy who
listen to depressive music in the winter or something. But a
hangover usually result in some sad singer/songwriter or
moody ambient

If my environment would have any effect on my taste I would
be listening to Ibiza Anthem's all day.

np. Soren Weile - Riot

i think this describes it better for me, I dont know if
there is that much effect of where I am, although its nice
to listen to relaxing stuff when you are driving through the
country and its nice to play Shy FX when you are driving
through the Drive-Thru lane

but still, your environment probably has something to say on
your mood...

I find this interesting:

"A less obvious one
is how being at my grandmothers place makes me want to make
chiptunes and being at my parents' place makes me want to
make songs made entirely out of one sound or just whatever I
can reach without getting up or some other very limiting
project frame. "

I can relate to that, I travel a lot for work and all the
music I do in hotels is along the same lines.

Probably something to do with the gear, I suppose: In a
hotel it's only a laptop through headphones, no external
gear. At my parents' only Reason and Floops and a very
limited sample library compared to my laptop/home studio, so
I suppose it's natural I make more synthetic stuff there.

I also think the net as an environment is an interesting
concept: The one sort of music that has been constant (even
if I listen to it less than another genre, it's always
there) is IDM. I imagine this is because I associate it with
the internet. The time I went most of it was when I only had
net access at work. I probably got back into hip hop more at
that time as I was listening to a lot on the radio.

oh boy are you missing out!
um, ive only ever lived in the city/suburbs, and my music
tastes don't go too far off anywhere, but i still make my
way around styles from ambience to more faster louder stuff.
as in, i'm guessing living in the country would make a
difference, but ive got no idea, and how can i have any
idea, when just living in the city makes it diverse enough.

Same more me I think. Not so much environment as mood.

Not much at all, I think... music is escapism for me, it's
an aural adventure away from where I am. Although I have an
affinity for Celtic influences because that's big around
here. I hear it a lot and it feels comfortable and familiar.
But most of what I listen to feels alien.

even though i'm not from jamaica, I <3 SKA! but i am from
orange county and i'm 26. so if you put it together roughly
ten years ago, 96-97, i was 16. now ask yourself, "what was
popular then?" we got... reel big fish, the aquabats!, save
ferris, sublime, no doubt, voodoo glow skulls, op ivy,
skankin pickle and many more you've probably never heard of.
i can agree with how the question could be true about
environment effecting taste/choice in music. just like i
also love punk as well.
