I've noticed a lot of people use Soulseek on this board. Soulseek only has a Windows client and a barely functional Linux one, which leaves me locked out (as a Solaris and occasional MacOS user).
Right now, when I hear about artists on the board, I go to the record label site and try to find some sample tracks. A lot of the time none are provided. Then I go to OpenNap or Gnutella to take a look and usually can't find any either.
Would it be a good idea to standardize on a system for everyone on the board to use? This way we can find stuff we're all interested in. I would suggest one of the OpenNap clients (WinMX, etc), since they are cross-platform and have a good chat system. Gnutella is also a possibility. We could even run our own server if someone is willing to host it. Whaddaya think?

I thought they could make one, but as with anything, too many user = too much publicity = closed down.
I have a policy of only sharing electronic music on soulseek to stop it becoming mainstream.

Soulseek seems a rather closed system. One developer, no source code, and the main server is run out of his basement. What happens if the developer is "persuaded" to give up the project? The protocols for OpenNAP and Gnutella are open and those services are nearly impossible to shut down. Just a thought.

Soulseek is underground...thats it's big appeal...
And if it end, it ends...tho I doubt it now as it's in constant dev and there are a number of new users who are working on extending it to other platforms...
