I'm a big fan. His critique of certain human specimens can
be hilariously uncanny. He was a good mod too, before he
went apeshit. I always saw him as this ruthless vigilante
mod. He wouldn't just close a thread, he'd ridicule everyone
involved, putting their mothers to shame, and then he'd
close the thread.

Appreciated.

but that'll be it from me on the subject

I really don't have any problems with dog_belch... don't
know the guy that well, but I believe I've found a lot of
his posts pretty funny over the years!

How can you say anybody "knows their music"? This has
nothing to do with dog_belch, it's just an idea that gets
thrown around here a lot that I really don't understand. If
you hate Chris Clark and other newer 'IDM' acts you "know
your music", do you? I suppose braindead friends of that
reviewer for Q who claimed that only anorak-wearing Germans
would like Granz Graf thought he "knew his music", too.

Yeah, this message board seems to have a "general consensus"
about a lot of things... that certain things are generally
considered good, and other things are generally considered
bad... Me personally, I just like what I like. If something
sounds good to me, whether it is hardcore electronic music
that makes my ears bleed, or some hindu monk chanting, then
I like it.

I think you'll go even madder than you are already at the
minute if you keep taking those sorts of things quite so
literally. By saying "anorak wearing Germans" they're not
actually saying, specifically, Germans in anoraks, they're
employing two powerful stereotypes to combine ONE ÃœBER
STEREOTYPICAL hypothetical figure that, on reflection, does
pretty much sum up someone who took uncommon interest in the
noisy, overrated racket that is Gantz Guff.

"Knows his music" has nothing to do with someone's liking of
a particular music; I actually disagree with dog_belch's
tastes in some music (for example, he dislikes dubstep,
whereas I love it).

Knowing their music (or indeed "knowing their
cars/dogs/planes") just implies someone has a wide knowledge
of the subject, not that they have "good taste" (whatever
that is) in it. The point I was making is that unlike, say,
Bill_Hicks who was also forever slagging people off, he
isn't clueless about 90%+ of the music discussed here. As a
result, not only is he able to contribute to the music
threads, but is even funnier with his music-related jokes.
For example, in his 89 EP thread, he jokingly said about a
needing a shitty hard house mix done by the studio teaboy on
the reissue (or something similar). His wide knowledge of
music allows him to make jokes which are not only funnier,
but more pertinently, more relevant to an electronic music
message board.

I completely agree that having a general consensus on what
is good/bad in terms of taste is silly and something I'm
happy to go against: I've said on several occassions that I
reckon Dire Straits are great and that Radiohead have been
fairly poor since OK Computer, neither of which are popular
views here.

I know they didn't mean that literally sir, I simply think
they were being unfairly harsh about the E.P. And, noisy and
overrated though the first and last tracks off that E.P may
be, don't you find the middle number rather ballsy and
dancey? Even my dad liked that one.

Okay, I have to say I've been humbled by this post and you
are correct. Sometimes it seems more of a case of people
being united in hatred for something, though, particularly
certain artists who really aren't that bad.

this board is clique-y like a fuckin high school. dog belch
although has been fuckin funny many a time in the past, in
the paaaaaaaast, 9 times out of 10 i'd say he is a complete
and total shitfuck. then new members join (the same new
members that phobz supposedly could use some $$$ from
upgraded memberships) the second any one of the new members
post something the "clique" disagrees with the "clique"
cries "B7"!! i'm just sayin... i couldn't be arsed to give
a fuck really. people are free to do what they do but the
"clique" must impose their collective will on a tiny
insignificant corner of teh interweb which in 15-20 years
will be dead and burried and no one will ever dig it up...
who did what 50 years ago now? oh yeah, nobody did nothing.

Come now, that is just silly talk, man. Some people get
along better better with each other than with others, that
is only natural. This 'clique' thing exists only in yours
and EVOL's heads. It's a way of thinking most of us left
behind in high school. I used to enjoy your presence,
funkmaster, but your more recent posts have made me cringe
like a dwarf wandering through a sewage pipe.

Well a clique isn't necessarily something you specifically
start, like "Hey, I'm going to start a clique. Would you
guys like join?" I think what me and EVOL are noticing is
that someone will make a comment, like me a few nights ago
in the Madonna thread, and then some asswipe who disagrees
with the point of view takes offense to it for some reason
and decides to attack the person. Then all the buddies of
that person, who really have nothing to do with the
arguement, which is stupid in the first place, will join in
for some reason and attack the person as well. Maybe it's
not as pronounced now, and I'm not sure how long you've been
on this site, but it used to get really annoying. Whether
that's a clique or what, I don't know, but it's pretty
stupid.

hahahaah, your argument for the existance of a clique is
brilliant.

In 4 simple steps how to prove the exitstance of wmd
in Iraq
cliques:

1)Claim cliques exist

2)Get told that they don't

3)OMFG more than 1 person told me I am wrong. I am like
HAL9000, I cannot make a mistake.

4)Existance of cliques proven.

I think maybe there is a high amount of in jokes on here,
and people who know each others "real" name, but so what, not
really cliquey.

On topic, I think Mr Belch is a good chap. I look forward to
his continuing adventures on the good ship Zilty.

Whilst I don't think the cliques here are very rigid, or
indeed particularly nasty in terms of bearing grudges/being
spiteful (although there are a couple that do, but they're a
very small minority), I do think they exist. You can
guarantee if you criticise or just disagree with certain
members (and it is only a few) 2 or 3 of their buddies will
appear and join in, even if only to post the same opinion as
their mate to seemingly make their argument more believable.
Most amusingly, I've seen this occur in situations where in
their earlier posts (in another thread a few weeks
previously), some of the allies have either indicated
neutrality, or even agreement with your side of the
argument, but they conveniently overlook this when their
mate is losing a debate.

I'd hereby like to declare that:
1. I'm completely oblivious to any form of clique
whatsoever. Some might call it "socially retarted". I prefer
the term "Social Einzelganger".
2. I wanna go medieval on dogs' arse, before I cut his
throat.

Or was that over the top? Here's a manly kiss and an even
more manly hug to compensate.

ya know after reviewing these replies, regardles of wether
or not you believe in the existence of cliques in
this community, because really, you're either blind to it or
it's plain as day. it all comes down to perspective. if
you want to look up clique in the dictionary it's loosely
the same defintion fly agaric uses, "Some people get
along better with each other than with others, that is only
natural. This 'clique' thing exists only in yours and EVOL's
heads."
to try and disprove my pov. which brings up
another point by dave_g that "there is a high amount of
in jokes on here, and people who know each others "real"
name, but so what, not really cliquey."
so it very well
maybe that my perspective is askew. i also
believe ceri jc makes a very an insightful observation in
his last reply.

so in short as i said originally, "i couldn't be arsed to
give a fuck really. people are free to do what they do."

and from my impression that uviol so politely asked for,
"i don't even think i'm on here enough for my
opinion to hold any weight."
it may just come down to
the simple fact that i can't imediately pick up on
every little sarcastic joke i read.

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2007-01-12 17:48 [#02031161]

Yeah, and obviously people will become closer and get to
know certain people better then others, that's only natural.
The only thing that I don't like is the negative aspect of
it, like what Ceri said, that someone will present a
different opinion or perspective on a particular topic, and
then someone and there clique will go to town on that person
with personal attacks and the like. Come on now, that's
really pretty immature isn't it?
